Mjsee, never use metal polish on Stiffel lamps. They aren't solid brass and come with specific instructions to clean with a soft damp cloth. I got two from ebay that had every spec of plating polished off the base. Still haven't decided whether it have it replated or leave as it. They are still quite beautiful (the old Lennox ones). Buffetgirl, there are great bargains to be had on ebay for mid century lamps however, finding the right shade is a real challenge and not inexpensive. So by the time you pay for shipping, rewire and purchase a good quality shade, you may not be saving much money.

island - I don't miss those fireplace doors at all! :) We'll try and sell them on Craigs List but wonder if anyone will want them. LOL. Yes, we did replace the entire firebox. We purchased a Heat & Glo direct vent gas fireplace and had to pull out the old firebox and reframe for the direct vent unit. There are many styles of doors they offer, and the prices vary. We liked the fancy arched ones, but not for $999! We went with the Folio, clean face front which was no charge. Figured we would put the "savings" toward the flooring. If you find something like a vase or sculpture that is an appropriate size and shape for the shelves (something tall that is almost the height of the shelf space) you could spray paint it a blue that looks good with your china or that looks good with your walls. Or white, if you end up with a colored background to the shelves. It could be originally metal or ceramic. Obviously nothing valuable - thrift stores are a good place to find this type of thing.
