Ogon 'Gold Rush' Dawn Redwood: is it smart; or what?
Comments (13)Horseman, your question about the growth rate is similar to what I am wondering. My tree has not added any height at all since it was planted last year. Neither does the trunk seemed to have thicken enough for me to perceive, if at all. If the late winter freeze issues had not distracted me, I would have been posting questions about the slow growth rate. Yesterday, I read on a website describing the cultivar, that the 'Gold Rush' cultivar does grow slower than the species. My 'Gold Rush' has a clean trunk about 3 feet up before the trunk forks of into two thin, flexible and arching, but still slightly branched and well leafed out trunks which makes up the canopy of the tree. It looks to me that the only reason the trunk is not branching out lower on the trunk is due to the way the grower pruned and trained the tree prior to shipping it to me. I planted mine in mid May of last year, and yes in the heat and drought of the summer the leaves did tend to want to turn brown. Whenever I saw the slightest amount of browning in the leaves, I would water the tree well, and each time, the leaves responded quickly, by changing again to their nice bright healthy color. Currently the leaves of my 'Gold Rush' look golden, and I can see some of the healthy bright green of the cultivar's normal spring leaf color trying to emerge from the base of those golden colored leaves....See MoreDawn Redwood vs Bald Cypress
Comments (63)Beng, Initially, I thought it may be Taxodium mucronatum. I asked around. A few thought it looked like T. mucronatum. A director of university arboretum liked its form and asked for cones. He noted that the size of seeds fall in between mucronatum and distichum. The key difference between these two species is that mucronatum stays green about a month longer (starts growth early and can retain green foliage significantly longer into late fall/early winter. Even most of winter if it is mild enough. However, this one is drops its foliage at the same time as other bald cypress trees so who knows? I wish I could find out where it came from. I haven't seen any bald cypress like that....See MoreToo late to grow a dawn redwood?
Comments (12)So the redwood seedling can survive winter only if their stem is wooden or can they survive even smaller? Because my giant sequoia seedling are no more taller than 4inch and their stem is ~ 0.07inch wide. And i will order a pack of dawn redwood seeds later this year and cold stratify them until february. I may sound as a beginner "because I'm one :)" but I'm interested in this kind of hobby and getting info from you guys, it helps a lot....See Moreover wintering dawn redwood indoors?
Comments (16)I'm gonna go against the grain a bit and suggest AGAINST putting it straight outside. Its not ready for the cold and if it is put straight outside into a cold environment now, it might die. I had some Single-leaf pinyon seedlings shipped to me from Oregon or California (I don't recall which state honestly) to Elko last fall. It was already growing cold here, but it was obvious that the seedlings thought it was still a good season to be growing since they were still flush. I made the mistake of putting them straight outside, and they didn't make it. Unfortunately, I didn't have any other options, no garage or basement to get them acclimated. I'd go with a chilly garage first, to get it on the road toward dormancy. If you can encourage it to go dormant first, then put it outside, that'd be a better route....See MoreToronado3800 Zone 6 St Louis
