Son Gave Me a Great Gift

It is a junk call blocker. It is called CPR CallBlocker. He researched it after seeing the junk call situation when he visited last time. This one had the best reviews. It comes with a list of the common junk call numbers already installed, and then you can add more too. As you get junk calls, you just hit the red Block Now button and that number is added. I have not hit the button yet, because we have not had any junk calls because of the list of them the manufacturer supplies to begin with. Usually I get 5 or more a day!

I can block up to 30 numbers on the uniden phone I have, but it still rings once, which is annoying. My daughter got something like your son got you, and she can block (or unblock one she may have blocked accidentally), AND it doesn't ring at all. I'd love to have one. Maybe someday. Wish I had it for upcoming election year. They're as bad as telemarketers.

We have our number unlisted. My DH changed packages a few years ago and forgot to specify unlisted and the calls flooded in....at least 5 a day. I thought once he unlisted us it was the end, but I had had enough and called one day. They were able to unlist us again and assured me the calls would end. It took about two weeks, but they did stop. It's worth it to me to spend a few dollars a month not to be assaulted with calls.

If he's stumbling into vegetable gardening, "Commonsense Vegetable Gardening for the South" is my Bible for veggie gardening. Having grown up in Illinois and spending 10 years in Alaska, the timing of when to plant here in Texas was my biggest obstacle. You can grow various things year-round, you just need to know when to plant, and what varieties do well here. This book is great for that. When he gets good, then he can experiment! This book is out of print, but you can generally find them used on Amazon. The authors have a new one out called "The Southern Kitchen Garden," but I really like the old one better. I'm not wackeyweeder but I know how she made the balls. I did a few a few years back. You need to go to the craft dept and buy a glass bowl...like a fish bowl or whatever they have. (They're usually not more than $3 at our Wal-Mart.)You'll also need a bag or two of the flat marbles in the colors you want, a tube of silicone caulking, a terra cotta pot and a saucer that the bowl will fit on and a string of lights if you want it lighted. Take the fish bowl and turn it upside down. Now take a marble and put the silicone on it and stick it to the bowl. There is a trick to this because if you get too much silicone, the marble will fall off and if you don't get enough, it will fall off. You'll figure it out as you go. Keep repeating until the bowl is finished and let it sit and dry (overnight is best). Take the terra cotta pot and silicone the saucer to the bottom of it. This will be your holder for the ball. Just place the ball on the saucer so it's upside down and put the lights up in it and you're done. Leslie

It wasn't a gift, but when DH and I were at my Step-father's on Boxing day to help him eat the desserts, he mentioned that a neighbour's wife had died of cancer this summer. This was a total shock to me. My parents live on a court, and I "know" of the man he was talking about because I remember when he got his little long-haired doxie as a puppy. We got such a kick out of him training this teeny-weeny dog.....he was scared of the grass, wouldn't walk on it. The couple is about my age. When we were leaving I told hubby to drop me off at the guy's house. He had his Christmas lights on, and I knocked. I told him who I was, and that how sorry I am, etc etc. We both had tears in our eyes and we rubbed each other's arm; (didn't hug.) He was so touched that I would stop and see him. His wife died 3 weeks after Mom. I'm so glad I did that, and I still tear up thinking about him (as I am now)

There's a few free ones online, some people here have used them and say they work. I have not tried yet but I get probably 4 or so a day. Most of the time it's the only calls I get on the home phone. I do get a few on the cell phone which I really don't want, that bothers me.
