Seedling problem -- seeds don't seem to know which way is up
Comments (2)Melody, I assume you've grown those kinds of seeds before, and know what they normally look like. Is there any chance that they've been exposed to a low dose of herbicide of some kind? I occasionally hear stories of deformed plants due to a bad batch of municipal compost or even a bad batch of commercial potting soil tainted with some kind of persistent herbicide. No way to really confirm those stories, but a low dose of some herbicides (2,4-D overspray for example) can cause curly growth, and it's easy to believe that some species would be more sensitive than others. If the potting mix is tainted, the only thing you could do is wash all the old medium off the seedlings and transplant them into some new mix. Comments (6)We also generally have extremely dry winters, but ever since we were hit with 2 hurricanes within a week of each other in 2004 and received over 15 inches of rain, we have never dried out. We had a record rainfall in December 2005 of almost 5 inches in one night, and another record rainfall in January 2006, and over the month of February we received 12.9 inches of rain. UNHEARD OF. Our ground is saturated, the water table is only 4-6 inches below the soil, and I have had to dig a dry streambed in the back by the pool to divert water down the hill and keep it from pooling at the back door 4 inches deep. SO, I can say, NO they don't rot. At least mine don't. I also have many other "elephant ears" planted out in the natural bogs on our property (which is 5 acres)...these include Colocasias (Black Magic, Black Marble, Chicago Harlequin, Milky Way, Yellow SPlash, Imperial, fontenesii, and Fallax), ALocasias (New Guinea Gold, Macro Albo variegata, regular green, culculatta, Hilo Beauty, Portodora, Sinuata, Odora...) and Xanthosomas (regular green, Mickey Mouse, Lime Zinger, Jacquinii, etc)...all of these have been growing in water since the hurricanes in Sept 2004 and none have rotted, in fact, their stands have increased greatly....See MoreWhich way up to plant Cosmos seeds etc
Comments (3)Hi Poppygal, I heard certain kinds of tear-shaped seeds such as that of Echinacea and Shasta daisies can benefit, if at least marginally, from planting pointed side down. I've tried it this spring and have had very good germination results. Good luck!...See MorePosting pictures, every which way but up?
Comments (23)There is so much discussion out there about this issue. The Apple forums are full of threads. Some cite a Mac/Windows issue, but I see sideways photos on my Mac devices, so it's not necessarily that. There is an orientation flag embedded in photos, indicating right-side-up. Clearly it doesn't always work, e.g., here on GW. Maybe it's the board software? I have both an iPhone and iPad. I never take pics with my iPad, which isn't the current model. I have an iPhone 5S and take photos in both portrait and landscape modes all the time. Whether I'm sending one as an email attachment, directly to Facebook or to Flickr (where all my photos posted here reside), I never get orientation mishaps. I never post directly from my iPhone to GW. I always import into iPhoto, crop if necessary, save to my Desktop with a logical filename, and then upload to Flickr. If you take a photo in landscape orientation, even if your iPad thoughtfully rotates it for you in viewing mode, the image file may still think it belongs laying on its side. When you import into, say, iPhoto, you can rotate the file and it gets saved that way, esp. if you export it to your Desktop with a new filename. Yes, an extra step or two, but just part of a workflow that corrects the issue....See Moredaftcowuk
