I only wear reading glasses, so I am likely not much help to you. But my new reading glasses are larger frames than I usually buy and deep red (Tom Ford). My DGD thinks I am really cool. Your new choice sounds cool to me.

When I looked at frames a few weeks ago (before I actually -needed- them), they told me they had some cool Tom Fords coming in at the beginning of the year. I'll take a look again before I choose. I was admittedly smitten by the face a face line.

I have a matte black frame with a greige ear piece. The frames aren't heavy so I think they look fine in summer. I have blue eyes and the black frames really accentuates them. Kind of like black mascara would.

A friend and I were talking about eyeglass frames the other day. We agreed that the older you get, the more you need bolder frames - frames that make a statement. It's funny how seemingly quickly the neutral looking frames - metal or rimless - became "old lady" looking.

How timely this topic is. I'm going to the eye doctor for a routine exam later today. Since I have a good chunk available in my flexible spending account, I'm thinking about getting new computer glasses. I had lasik surgery several years ago so no longer need glasses for distance, only reading and on the computer at work. I've been buying fun reading glasses online HERE, but might want to get something better quality for at least one pair.

I wear glasses all the time. My current specs are two years old and we are about the same age. These were a bold choice for me when I got them. They are pretty chunky black frames by Prada with an orange and black print on the inside. link I have really enjoyed them. I was nervous when I got them, but am happy with the choice I made.

Sine jettisoning my contacts I am FIRMLY in the camp glasses are not a fashion statement. I want people to see ME. Not really interested in some fancy artwork hanging off my face for everyone to take notice of. I choose a color and style that best blends into my face. I would love it if they were totally invisible. I still cringe at my 80 yr old mom. My sister took her shopping for her latest pair--they are so DISTRACTING and take away from her natural beauty. They are a disaster!! But sister is THE ONE with TASTE so mom bought them. I am hoping they break some how and I have the timing to tell her what I think--show her side by side pictures of herself in the hideous things..and convince her to go more conservatively next time. Right now all I can do is smile and say "I am glad you like them" when she asks NON STOP what I think (this tells me she too knows they are not flattering, (my opinion is a non factor in her life)

Warby Parker has some cute ones and there are several in their line that you can test drive. They will send you up to 5 pair to try. Of course, the ones I really like aren't available for trial. And I'm not sure I want to buy online and worry about getting that personalized fit.

There are many face a face frames on Ebay for nominal prices.

Arcy, I think it depends on the glasses and on the face and age. At 58, those nearly invisible glasses make me look older than I am, kinda like Granny Clampett, if Granny had short spikey hair instead of a bun. The prominent, funky glasses make me look about 10 years younger. About the only places I have lines are around my eyes and they cover them up.

Lol suero! Yaya thanks. I did look on eBay but didn't find my styles. Outside I can't /won't order online. I have an extreme astigmatism and fit and alignment is crucial.

I just learned the model I was leaning towards is Kate Young style k-101 (not face a face) I will post a photo later but they are less than 1/2 the price of the others. I think they're the ones I'll go with. They are bold but classic imo... They will stand out on my face.

I'm with ya, funky. I have a problem getting mine aligned properly on my face. It seems one ear is lower than the other, & a narrow bridge so it is hard to get the fit just right. And also with the reading prescription, I'd rather make sure it's correct too. I do keep several cheap readers around but I wear my good ones for main reading tasks.

I hate wearing glasses but they've become a fact of life for the past year. I do have progressive contacts but they're not good for extended hours or dry environments.

I agree that most people look better with a bolder frame once they pass the 50 yr. mark. Bolder doesn't have to be wacky, though.

I tried Warby Parker and while the frame suits me I don't see as well with them as the ones I had fitted by a local optometrist.

Funny, I actually ordered the Warby Parkers because I had used my insurance allowance on my original pair (ordered in winter) that looked too heavy to me with summer clothes. They seemed like a good deal for a backup pair but since the fit is off I've rarely worn them.

I have a narrow bridge too. but the real issue for me is that the astigmatism requires transition in the lens to follow the shape (or, more accurately, the misshape) of my retina. So if the lens is just a little off.. and the adjustment is just a little off.. they cause me big issues. I just can't take a chance online.. though I suppose I could buy frames online if i could find someone local to do the adjustments and lenses.

Here's the front runner. I am leaning fowards this one from Kate Young. Of course, I will check out more when I am in the store again this weekend. They are 1/3 the price of my #2 pick and they were my favorite even before I knew the price.

Pictured in tortoise on the model. Not too funky-- just a little large and bold. I would get the black with bone interior. I did try on the tortoise and thought I'd prefer them-- but I ended up loving the black (I was wearing black that day. Not sure how much that influenced my preference).

Those are pretty good. Are you sure the tortoise shell and the black are the same frame? The top part looks a lot thicker not he tortoise shell than on the black. I like the black better.

I'm ready for a new pair too. A friend has some quite large dark frames and I really like them. She's a decade+ younger and a lot more attractive that I am though. I think I'll go larger this time despite that. ;-)

Yes, they are the same. I questioned them too but they all came from the product page. I think it's the angle that makes the tortoise shell look different. I share the photo with the model because it's not clear how large and bold the frames are when not on a face.

I hear you about comparing yourself to younger/prettier women in similar styles-- like..hmmm.. the model above??!! LOL. I look at her and think, yeah, I am blonde.. but yikes, not nearly as young, hip or attractive!

Oh, I like those a lot. And I do like the black. The peek of bone on the outside is very cool too. The shape reminds me a bit of my Tom Fords.

I'm a primary contacts wearer with one pair of backup glasses in current progressive prescription. I'm thinking about getting another pair with my insurance next year, so I'm interested to see where this thread goes. Maybe I should go bolder, too?!

I just recently got new glasses, I have severe astigmatism extreme myopia, count fingers vision, legally blind with no correction. I can't wear contacts anymore due to dry eyes from Sjrogrens syndrome. The first pair I got had a problem with one of the screws falling out so I chose a new frame, this one is by Ray Ban is made of carbon fiber and is extremely light weight which is very important since my lenses are like coke bottles. They are not my normal choice but I do like them because they are so light. I got new prescription sunglasses too. I could order any frame online and then just take them to any optical shop and have them order my lenses for those frames they will do that, that way they fit them and make all the adjustments. I will always wait a few weeks the run by my eye doctors office and have them check the glasses to make sure they match the prescription he wrote. With my eyes it's extremely important to have them spot on. We have been having them done at Sears optical with excellent results. I get my exam strictly done by my ophthalmologist / eye surgeon.

I wish I could wear contacts! Because of the astigmatism, I need to wear torqued hard lenses and they only correct my vision when looking straight ahead. That doesn't help with reading at work or well-- more things than you'd think.But that's ok. I have been wearing glasses since I was 5. I associate my "look" with glasses.

I realize these are not so funky as the title suggested I am looking for.. but they are way out of my comfort zone. I don't like drawing attention to myself.. or my face.

I typically go to an ophthalmologist too but I am having trouble getting an appt around my new work schedule. Do you really think it makes that much of a difference for getting the right prescription? I am absolutely doing this backwards-- tomorrow I have an appt at the eyeglass store.. I have an appt with an optometrist next week. It's just the way schedules broke out.

I think you can get the right prescription from your optometrist - that's what they do. Going to an ophthalmologist for a regular eye exam is overkill and increases health care costs.

rosesstink, I think you are right for the normal person-- but with my extreme astigmatism, I have always seen an ophthalmologist. Getting the prescription right for astigmatism is tricky. Since I am legally blind in my left eye and my vision cannot be completely corrected, I am less concerned about the health care costs and more concerned about what is best for me. This time around, I NEED glasses asap.. so I need to go with the dr that can get me in the quickest. I am feeling uneasy about it due to the high cost of my lenses.. but it's what I am going to do this time around.

With my eyes I would never get my prescription from anyone but a good ophthalmologist, I have such extreme myopia I have lattice degeneration of my retinas and must have an extensive indirect exam. Putting a lens directly on my eyeballs and using a headset with the brightest light I have ever seen.

I wore the hard lenses for years they don't make soft lenses for my prescription unfortunately. I keep telling my doctor I will be happy to have cataract surgery and have the multi focal lenses implanted in my eyes, it will be the first time in my life I will be able to wake up and see. It will be like a miracle. My sister has eyes similar to mine and she has been through the cataract surgery and said it was amazing being able to see. With out any corrections all I can see is blobs of colors no shapes.

The good news: the small boutique eyeglass place was happy to make a temporary fix to my glasses (where the mall places were unwilling!). This bought me some time..

the bad news: I need the extra time because the frames Ichose aren't going to work for me. They don't fit on my narrow bridge well.. which makes them sit very low on my face. They are already a very large frame and they just didnt look right.

Also, I intentionally wore colors other than black when I tried them on this time because I was wearing all black when I previously tried them on. I was not as enamored with black when I wasn't wearing it.

I am somewhat back at square one. I did find two frames I liked on but both had something working against it. Tiffany glasses really seemed to fit me well. Quite a few styles look nice on but they were all styles with a tiffany blue stem. I am not sure how I feel about the tiffany blue-- I do like the color but I am not sure I will like them in a professional setting.. and I am concerned they are too young. I DO love the havana tortoise which is very dark and not all that busy. Unfortunately, the store didnt have many styles that use the havana on the stem as well as the eye pieces.

Next weekend I am going to take a sister and niece with me to look at them again. I am starting to consider getting two pairs. The styles I am looking at are much less expensive than some of the other offerings.. and considering I am in a bad place when one breaks, it seems smart to have a backup.

Here's a Tiffany style I am liked.. what do you think? Do the T blue stems look too young?

I brought my husband along when I went to get new glasses, but another customer just brought his cell phone. He took selfies of himself in the various frames, then put on his glasses to check how he looked in each of them. I thought that was a great way to pick the most flattering style.

I like them ok, but something about the all-blue stems is a little off-putting. I see what you mean, so maybe taking someone with you will help. It is very hard to judge without seeing them on you. Have you tried any Kate Spade frames? They really fit my narrow bridge very well. I had 2 pair before getting my latest Ford's and both were very similar to your T's - tortoise with only the inside colored (one was pale green and the other a similar blue). They may not have that style any longer but might have something similar that could fit your face shape. Heck, I'm older than you by several years and I kwym.

I have to take selfies because once I take off my glasses I can't see anything including the frame to put on my face. So I or my husband or the girl waiting on me snap pictures, I put my glasses back on and check out the pictures. It's not a fun process and is very time consuming.

Thanks all! I did take selfies.. but it's not really enough. It helped me see what shapes work well on my face.. but I already knew that to large degree.

i am looking for that balance that is classic style with an unusual twist. I am very picky about the tortoise shell designs. I don't want too busy.. the darker havana tortoise is perfect. There are Tiffany styles that are all tortoise but this shop had very few. Tiffany's is also tricky because they all have some bling.. and I nix some styles because the bling is too precious.. hearts or bows or such. Maybe I can get them to order a style in for me.. and there will be new styles arriving weekly for awhile.I'd have already ordered a pair if it weren't for the tiffany blue stems! I just can't imagine wearing them with a black suit.

I haven't tried Kate Spade -- this shop didn't carry her line. They do have Tory Burch which I has some similar styles. I didnt go the whole way through them. I think going back with my sister is the key. She knows the range of my style and she won't hesitate to say "no way!"

I don't like the blingy stuff on the earpiece. I don't want to wear designer's logos. Actually, I hate that. So last year I got lucky at Costco and got two pairs. One is a black Cole Haan, tailored and in the shape of the frames you recently posted. The second pair is a tortoise shell and I don't have it handy to check it for you. I, in my advanced age, prefer to wear classic styles and I get compliments on these specs, even tho they are low key. This is the first time I bought glasses at Costco and am happy I did so. I found the eyeglass techs to be competent and knowledgeable. I did ask the tech questions, such as, what would you recommend to a fashionable thirtysomething? I aint been a thirtysomething in four decades! Just wanted to relive some former glory and get fashion advice.
