I think I know what the problem is with the cost for the prescription. I go to the eye dr. every 4 months, because of an eye health issue. Now and then I need a new prescription, most times I don't. The EXAM is different. If you go to the eye dr. and can easily read the chart, that's the end of that part of the exam. However, if you do need a new prescription, they generally use a very expensive piece of equipment to read what prescription you need, then they verify it with the "Which is better this or that?" routine. You're not paying for the piece of paper you get, but the exam itself--which involves extra extra time and equipment. Since I go so often, I can assure you, the price varies by what you have done. If I just go for a quick exam, it's less, if I have my eyes dilated (about once a year), that's a little extra; if I need 'the works'--including the exam for new glasses--that costs the most. You do realize, that taking a pair of glasses you bought new elsewhere to your neighborhood optician to have them fitted is about the same as carrying a cup into McD's with you and going over to the soda machine and filling it, right? Opticians don't appreciate that sort of thing. Many do simple repairs and adjustments for free, no matter where you bought your glasses, but that sort of thing is exactly why many of them are now starting to CHARGE all their customers for those things that used to be just a part of customer service. Opticians, in most states, anyway, are medical professionals who have had to go to school for years, and put a lot of time and effort into learning their specialty. As the mother of one--I can assure you that your gal at LC may have fitted your glasses with a smile on her face while you were in the store, but she wasn't happy about it. After all, she lost time she could have been using to help a paying customer, and she didn't get the commission on the pair of glasses she fitted to your face. Opticians really do consider that kind of thing very rude. They are generally much too professional to tell you that to your face, but they're just working people like you and I, trying to make it, and they can't really afford to give their work away for free--although a lot of people think they should.

The list price of cabinets is important to a cabinet dealer but to the consumer it is pretty meaningless.. As you can imagine a cabinet company's catalog can be huge, especially lines like Brookhaven or Omega, their catalogs have literally thousands of individual cabinets. They do not want to reprint their catalog every time they change the price (not as big a problem now that everything is on line, but the principle is the same). They set the list price way higher than they expect the cabinets to ever sell for and then give the individual dealer a multiplier to use to establish their wholesale cost for the cabinets. So when they need to change the price of their cabinets they just give the dealer a new multiplier. As an example. Lets say that the list price of a cabinet from company X is $100.00 and my multiplier is .46 so my cost for the cabinet would be $46.00. I know what I need to make on the cabinet in order to meet my obligations. Lets assume that in order to meet my overhead, and earn a little profit I need to mark up the cabinet 52% so I would sell the cabinet for about $70.00. If I was so inclined, I could then advertise that I was selling the cabinet at 70% of the list price. It is important to understand that list price comparison from one cabinet line to another is an apples to oranges tyupe of comparison. In my example I used Company X and a multiplier of .46, Company Y which manufactures lower cost and lower quality cabinets may have set their list price for the cabinet in our example at $130.00 so by comparing list prices you might conclude that Company Y's product was superior. What you don't know, however is what the dealer modifier is, ie what is the dealer's cost for the cabinets. In the case of Company Y their modifier is .25 so that cabinet cost the dealer $32.50, with the same 52% markup that cabinet would sell for about $50.00 or 50% of list. To add a little more confusion to the issue the modifier is not necessarily the same for every dealer in the manufacturer's dealer network. The modifier may vary depending on the dealer's volume and distance from the manufacturing plant. I hope that helped somewhat.

theclose, this is my second pair of LaFonts. I love the first pair, way more colorful than I would have chosen if others hadn't talked me into it. The new ones are more sedate. I'm not a wacky glasses person. I still think glasses shouldn't cost so much. I'm not a frame snob and would have gladly gotten something for 1/4 the price at Costco if I found something I liked or if someone had actually gotten up off their a$$ and offered to help me find something I liked.
