questionable fabricator of our soapstone counter tops
Comments (10)Florida Joshua installed our soapstone in May. We have a seam in our sink . . . . that you can't find. People have to search to find the 3 seams in our stone, because they are hard to see/feel. He used a black epoxy, it looks like your fabricator used white? And the bit about soapstone being porous and the water seeping in? Puhlease. False. Here's my sink. The seam is in the lower left hand side of the sink, about 3 inches in. Good luck trying to find it. This is freshly oiled. This is 3 months after install. We aren't oilers. As you can see, not having the stone oiled doesn't affect seeing the seam....See MoreHelp in choosing counter top material!!!!!!
Comments (94)Every choice has pluses and minuses, in the end you have to choose which plus and which minus matters the most to you and/or which have an easy fix (like using a cutting board under the crockpot; at work we have an extra piece under the big coffeemaker). budget mattered a lot to me (and I hated formica) so, I ended up with a lesser expensive granite and am very happy, no sealing or extra work for the stone I chose. I had formica previously which looked like h#*! from the day I moved in and didn't get better (except that I could use bleach to remove stains) so those of you whose formica looks like new after 30 years must be taking appropriate care -- using cutting boards (mine had little cuts all over) and so forth -- where my previous owners did not. But, I read that formica now is much better quality than what was installed 30 or 40 years ago. I looked at Burled Beach and liked it. It looked a warm sand-ish color on my samples in my house, but I saw a demo kitchen of it at a big box store and it was a warm greenish tone (I still liked it) under their fluorescent lights. You always have to ability to STOP and make changes unless the cabinets are all already made. If he is just now starting it might not be too late -- call him now! PS do you have an IKEA near to you? Most counter materials are less expensive there....See MoreMy New Corian Rain Cloud Counter, Thank YOU Joe Corlett For Advice!
Comments (26)Unlike Anglophilia, I actually tired of my neutral white counter with white subway tiled kitchen faster than I have my blue green glass accent tiles which still make me smile every shower. Every one's mileage will vary follow your heart and gut. As to resale I live on the golden coast in ct where everyone is pulling out the white on white kitchens and replacing with warmer woods and variety of color. My Craig's list offers Christopher Peacock kitchens frequently. So it seems many will hate the neutral aswell....See MoreThank you, Joseph Corlett
Comments (7)LP: Thanks so much; I get paid in gratitude alone. I used to work for a large fabricator who had contracts with the big box stores, which gave me a particularly good insight as to how the system works. I repeatedly dispel rumors about the big boxes, like that their faucets are factory seconds or that the quality isn't as good as those from a plumbing supply house. The big boxes don't make their money cheating fabricators or customers. They make their money using the leverage with manufacturers they have from their gargantuan buying power. It's Capitalism 101. I believe my time here as a participant is successful is because I tell posters the truth whether or not it's what they want to hear. And boy, they do not like what I tell them sometimes, believe me. You'll probably have to overlook my tone occasionally, but this is what makes this site valuable....See Moreemilyam819
