Hi Joseph, I want to thank you for sharing your expertise on this forum. I am in the midst of a kitchen and bath renovation and have heeded your advice countless times. In particular, your posts regarding countertops have been very helpful. I needed a full slab plus 2 sf of a second slab for the kitchen. I found 2 or 3 reputable sources but all required the purchase of two full slabs. I had no use for the additional material from the second slab. Then I saw that Home Depot sells by the sf, you pay for what you need, and read your posts about how HD works with independent fabricators and how customer satisfaction is so important. I was still a little nervous, but decided to go with HD to avoid having to buy that second slab. As it turned out, HD in my area uses a local fabricator with great reviews, and once I placed the order all of the details and follow up was with the fabricator, with the HD designer checking in to make sure everything was going well. i was worried that because I was paying less, there might be seams or the quality of the job would be lacking, but it was done to perfection and the fabricator had excellent communication and attention to detail. Without your input, I would have been too nervous to trust this expense to a big box store. If anyone is thinking about ordering from HD, I would say its a safe bet, especially if you know which fabricator your particular store uses so you can check reviews. Thank you, Joseph!

The Fairfield Inn just east of I-75 has electricity, water, and internet. Eggs and toasted bagels for breakfast, but this is last night's supper and probably tonight's too. The vodka is just out of the picture and we do have a fridge full of wine.

The cops allowed us back on the key this morning; some neighbors and I cleared the street of a fallen tree. Four and a half inches of rain. We were on the top side of the storm surge; Ft. Myers and Naples were on the bottom.

It's weird to cross major throughfares without stop lights, but everyone is being pretty cool.

Thanks so much; I get paid in gratitude alone.

I used to work for a large fabricator who had contracts with the big box stores, which gave me a particularly good insight as to how the system works. I repeatedly dispel rumors about the big boxes, like that their faucets are factory seconds or that the quality isn't as good as those from a plumbing supply house. The big boxes don't make their money cheating fabricators or customers. They make their money using the leverage with manufacturers they have from their gargantuan buying power. It's Capitalism 101.

I believe my time here as a participant is successful is because I tell posters the truth whether or not it's what they want to hear. And boy, they do not like what I tell them sometimes, believe me. You'll probably have to overlook my tone occasionally, but this is what makes this site valuable.

I had a pass-thru ledge and small bar area done in granite through HD years ago at my other house -- the fabricator did a great job. Was a small job with no seams, but still -- it was a smooth experience, good outcome, and didn't break the bank. So yea, depends on the fabricator -- plenty of horror stories on here even when the fabricator is a known, chosen entity with good reviews/reputation. Downside with HD is can't choose your slab (not that I was made aware of when I bought, anyway).

Joseph - I apologize for so many questions! I was looking at the Sink Strap and they also recommend these LC Brackets for tight situations. I will have three sinks to install and one of them will only have extra 1.5" width to play with so I am thinking these LC Brackets would be a better fit. Do you have any experience with these? The other vanities will have 7.5" extra width to play with so probably need the strap on these but I like the idea of just LC Brackets on all three sinks and no straps. Cyndi, I'm out of town until next week. I'll try to take some pics then. I did look at the Create Good sinks online, but just liked the multiple ledges and the accessories of the Prolific better. Also, I was able to look and touch it, try the accessories and buy it from the local kitchen store which matched the best online price I could find. Should I ever have an issue, they'll help me deal with Kohler. I have to say, I really don't like to order products sight unseen, especially expensive, bulky ones. No, I never considered an apron sink, I think apron sinks fit into farm house or vintage kitchens better than in my modern 60s house. Regarding scratches. The Prolific is not polished SS, so scratches don't show that much and the more use it gets, the more all scratches will blend into a "patina" and will become invisible. I couldn't tell you if it has scratches, I don't remember seeing any, probably because we always keep both racks and the bowl in the sink, The bowl collects stray used glasses or cups during the day until they get put in the DW in the evening. To be honest, I really don't care if my sink is scratched, as for me, it's a working sink, not a mirror, and as such it's super practical, so I don't need it to be "precious". At any rate, our sink is not in the island, and nobody sees its bottom unless they step right in front of it and take the racks out. It is true that Corian sheets are 30" wide, but when they are fabricated at the factory, during sanding the long edges get "rolled". These rolled edges, about 1/4" wide, have to be ripped off to make perfectly flat beautiful seams. Veined Corian is allowed to be mitered in corners. If you've got enough material and some time to fool around, depending on the veining and your luck, you can "shop" one side against another sometimes getting a remarkably inconspicuous seam. I didn't "shop" this seam very long as my choices were limited. The navel architect specified a 13' counter and Avonite only comes in ten footers. That seam is on the left side of this miter. Conspicuous. Inconspicuous. No, I take that back. That's "highly inconspicuous."
