Please help me keep my jade plant alive!
Comments (15)Hi all, thanks for all the advice; I went out today in an attempt to make a cozy new home for my poor ailing jade. I bought I believe a 3'' circumference unglazed clay pot with a drainage hole and a dish, a bag of perlite, and a bag of orchard bark. They didn't have any kind of mix, except the cactus soil that I've been using. Should I just mix the perlite and the bark, or does it need anything else? I've heard undyed aquarium rocks were good too... Doug, thanks for the info; it's currently outside and gets some direct light right now. It was inside on a ledge next to a window getting very indirect sun all winter; I moved it out when the leaves started drooping for no apparent reason thinking that maybe it needed more sun....See MoreKeeping Live Spaghnum Moss Alive
Comments (3)I also bought some live sphagnum moss from a seller and just ordered another bag of it to make sure I have enough to keep it all growing and producing more for my CP and orchid needs. I took all the moss I got out of the bags and separated out the mostly dead strands from the live strands and snapped the stems about 2-3 inches down from the capitulum so it is mostly sitting upright in containers. So far it has only been 2 days since I got it but it is still green so I hope to keep it all alive. I did collect a good bit of rain water and have some of the live moss just sitting in about 1.5 gallon plastic bin and it is pretty much all submerged in the rain water. I also had some younger sphagnum moss growing in there from the dried moss that germinated spores so it is a few different kinds of moss all mixed in one clear bin. It gets about 1-2 hours of direct sun and bright light for another few hours each day, but I want to try getting it in direct light for a few hours each day- i just do not want to overheat it, so I supplement with a florescent light that is about 2- 4 inches above the moss- I hope that provides enough light. Let me know if you think this is ok or if I should adjust anything....See MoreHow to keep roses alive through winter
Comments (10)I think its SO frustrating and irresponsible that stores like Lowe's and THD sell so many plants that really are not suited to the climate! I often see the rows and rows of gorgeous, bright blue lacecap hydrangeas they offer, and think sadly about how for the most part, these plants are never going to bloom again! (In my climate, only a very few lace cap/mop head hydrangeas are reliably bud-hardy). It makes me sad that then new gardeners get excited, buy the lovely plants, and then are disappointed when they don't bloom the next year. I just hope people don't assume its their fault and give up on gardening! Did the roses you bought have labels with names? Because if they do, you could research them and get the real story on their hardiness. I agree with the suggestion of keeping your receipts, in case they don't make it. Also, if you don't mind the hassle, you could increase their chances of survival by protecting them (I often do this with first-year roses that ARE hardy in my climate, as they sometimes need a little help during that first winter). You can mound the base with leaves, etc; and then I like to make little shelters for them out of leaf bags (paper ones). I cut off the top of the bag, so that I have a tube - slip this over the rose, secure it with a little twine and some stakes, and voila! You have an inexpensive rose cone! Best of luck with your roses!...See MoreDetermined to Keep My Gardenia Alive
Comments (37)Update: Leaves have halted their yellowing...or at least no new ones :) I am cursed with the wind here it seems. It blew over again in a storm sunday night. Ugh. I ran out in the rain to upright it and shovel the mix back in. Im sure I looked like a nut, but it was 5:15 am so hopefully no one saw me! It’s a beautiful day today and it looks awesome so far. We got 1.35” of rain so it’s well watered. It’s supposed to be nice again tomorrow and rain Wed Night through Thursday so I may bring it in. I am terrified of it staying too wet for too long without a good drying out period. Plus how would I fertilize it, that’s always been a question for me for those who don’t use an extended release fert. If it rains so frequently I would never have a chance to fertigate. Anyway that’s all for now with my gardenia saga. Side note, the boy has strep, ugh. He is feeling much better now that he’s got some doses of antibiotics in him. Fx I don’t catch the bug now!...See More- 10 years ago
