In our previous house we had a stack that included a single wall oven, convection/microwave, and warming drawer. I used the warming drawer when having a crowd over and never would serve straight out of it. Everything was kept warm, then moved to the island for serving.

See below for pics - I would actually like to have the entire stack even higher. I am 5'9", so I can reach. I have a galley kitchen, no island for serving from. My idea was that if I have a large group, I could set up from the range side of the galley, have some dishes on stove top, others in the warming drawer that ppl could serve from. But, not if the warming drawer is on the floor.

I suppose I could move it to underneath the stovetop, but that would really reduce amount of space for pots/pans (although I guess it would free up space below the oven - probably a "wash" in that respect?)

Is having the warming drawer under the cooktop not an option?

Yes, I'm checking with my contractor on that - he is concerned about code for having the gas shut off valve accessible. I guess it depends on the drawer configuration - if one drawer can be removed, then yes, we will go with the drawer under the cooktop.

Oh, and the microwave/oven combo is a set configuration - the microwave is on top.

Since you are 5'9" I would go with the higher oven stack height in the white layout. The yellow layout puts the oven and the warming drawer too low unless you were much shorter. I would not serve from the warming drawer; its going to be too low for that in either layout plus it might be messy and guests might not notice there was more food in the drawer if it was closed. Maybe what you need instead is a pullout shelf somewhere in the kitchen?

As for the warming drawer itself it is certainly an optional item in any kitchen and moreso in a compact kitchen like yours. I would not give up the pot/pan drawer beneath the cooktop or any other space that I would use every day in order to put in a warming drawer I would use a few times each year -- but your usage may be different.

What is across the aisle from the cooktop? If it's an island, can your warming drawer go there? I find that location handy for me for easy access both in and out. I prefer my drawer high - right under the counter top. When I had one down low (bottom of a range), I rarely used it. Now I use mine quite often, so Stan my usage is different than yours. I use it every time I host a big/holiday dinner, pizza night, make pancakes/French toast, when my son has late practice, when I don't have room in the oven to warm up bread, or just when my timing is off getting sides and main course done at the same time.

I have a layout similar to your request, except I also have an espresso machine so my microwave is even higher. I am average height and can reach just fine (but mine opens sideways). With you being so tall I really don't think it would be a problem.

Below is my setup if it helps you. I am 5'4" and it works well. The KD initially put the bottom drawer at 9.5" but I had her lift it. (The microwave is above the oven in a garage-lift cabinet.). I do sometimes pull things from the oven and have to make a half turn to put them on the island, and then open the warming drawer. But I prefer that over giving up other real estate in my somewhat modest kitchen.
