Pink, red, or red bicolor HT tolerates some afternoon shade zone 8?

A neighbor's tree shades back part of bed in late afternoon. Would like to have a tall red, red blend, or PB HT that will thrive in less than 8 hours of full sun.

Being in Texas, I would imagine MOST roses in your desired color would thrive in less than 8 hours of sun. That level of direct sun would be very appropriate in New York, Oregon, Washington, etc. Where UV and heat are intense, significantly less than 8 hours of direct sun are preferable for the vast majority of roses. When "full sun" was written and became part of the repeated "rose knowledge", the major authors were British, writing about conditions in British gardens. Vastly different from what a huge section of this country endures.

I so agree. I have roses thriving in 4-5 hours of morning sun whereas the ones that have more are miserable, especially during the many months of our summers, with shriveled up, small roses. All-day sun in a hot climate spells doom and gloom for many roses, especially those in the red to purple color spectrum.

I'll back up pineresin on this; snaxs's cladogram does not say the same thing as the TOL cladogram. The two trees are not the same, with one showing a lack of resolution (trichotomy) where the other shows resolution (dichotomy). Again, little point in arguing with somebody who keeps insisting they can read a cladogram when they apparently can't. Meanwhile I'm still trying to figure out what that blinking "Resin's water lilies" refers to.

I grow two Rose de Rescht bushes here in hot, humid Alabama. I planted them last February in all day sun. The bushes are nice rounded mounds that are about 3 ft x 3 ft now. The bushes are attractive and have stayed pretty clean without spraying. The blooms are beautiful and smell like heaven. Each had a big first flush...completely covered in blooms and have had good rebloom since. They haven't been covered in blooms again, but have consistently had several blooms each. The blooms don't last long on the bush and only a day as a cut flower, but the petals fall off and self clean without drying up and turning ugly. Color is pretty true to the first pics below that were taken in very hot September...not as purple as they look in the last couple pics which were taken in spring on a different camera.

Hi Kate, we're in different climates, but I'm no spray and all of my roses grow in less than ideal sun conditions cause that's all I have. :) Have you considered Royal William? I hesitate to recommend a rose I've only had for one year, but it shows real promise. Very disease resistant (here,) nicely bushy, bloomed a lot (especially for only a 1st year rose.) It's a Kordes (I purchased from Palatine Roses, who sells it as Duftzauber) and I have seen it recommended as one of the easiest/best roses for beginners. So far fragrance is only light-medium to my nose-which surprised me-but hoping that will improve with time. For comparison, I have both Oklahoma (5 years old) and Firefighter (3 years old), both of which have stronger fragrance than Royal William. I prefer the darker color and heavier fragrance of Oklahoma to FF and I agree it has both very good disease resistance and shade tolerance. Absolutely magnificent blooms especially in cooler weather, rich deep sophisticated burgundy red-I can't think of another red HT I like better-it just hardly blooms! Firefighter blooms much more than Oklahoma-and those blooms last longer than Oklahoma-but Firefighter is NOT disease resistant (here) and in fairness that may be worsened because it is growing in part sun instead of full sun. Because of it's strong fragrance, productivity, and lasting qualities, I think Firefighter would be a candidate for "best overall red HT" if it shows good resistance in your area or, of course, if you spray. But I expect F.F. might just continue to decline on me since it almost completely defoliates from blackspot each year. Hence why I have such high hopes for Royal William :) Hope that helps... Vap, first a caveat: roses do not do well in this garden. With that in mind, all the HTs died except Fragrant Cloud, Gruss an Teplitz and Steven's Big Purple. Oh, and I have a grafted Don Juan that lives but does not bloom - probably too shady. Take a look at Louise Estes. A pink blend that (to me) has it all in a HT. Nice bush, beautiful foliage, Fantastic bloom's on long cutting stems with a great fragrance. I'm pretty sure the Dallas area has a Rose Society. Check into that. Many of the members probably have been growing HT's for a long time and should be able to help you find the perfect HT's for your garden.

I agree--most HTs would love late afternoon protection--even here in my gardening zone 6 (Kansas).

Elle has been a very nice HT for me, good blooming pink/yellow bi-color.

Or if you want drama, here is the hot pink Peter Mayle, a taller, narrower HT (as opposed to Elle which is more spreading or bushy looking for a HT).

My former garden was closer to Houston proper, and the most sun it got was 5.5 hours in high summer, and then about 3 during winter. I had about 100 roses and they all did very well. HT's that I had were Veteran's Honor, Purple Passion, Barbara Bush, Barbra Streisand, Chrysler Imperial, Pink Peace, WWII Memorial, and more that I'm forgetting. My current garden has 250(ish) roses in all day, blazing sun and some of them can't take it at all. Texas sun is brutal.
