pruning of oaks and maples - season preference?
Comments (15)The "bleeding" of sap from maples, birch, et al, is of no consequence to the tree. In fact, I often use that factor-or its mention-as a way to separate good practitioners from not so good out on the street. What I mean, back when I actually pruned trees, is it would sometimes happen that some guy would come rushing out of the house, or would park his pickup with the ladders and saws in the back, walk over to our work zone, and scold us for happening to have pruned some maples during sap flow time. I used this to make an immediate determination that this person was not a very advanced thinker in terms of tree care. Not, BTW, directed at you Hug, just saying, that fact gets overblown by novices all the time in my experience. A healthy tree's turgor pressure is positive relative to the surrounding air. That is why sap "bleeds" out from a new pruning cut at certain times of year, and is indication that the tree is of sufficient health to do so. +oM...See MoreChoosing a different Oak, Shumard Oak?
Comments (25)It's good to know that peeling bark is normal. I haven't observed that yet on this tree but I won't worry if it does start to do that. Regarding watering I've been watering it every day since planting. I couple days here I'll probably slow that down to every third day for a couple iterations and then go to a normal watering cycle of once a week. As of today there aren't any wilted are brown leaves so I guess it wasn't too shocked by all the root work I had to do. Regarding the mulch. I use planner shavings as mulch. They are inferior to normal large wood chunk mulch but are free and keep the ground moist. This planting I was running low on shavings and mixed in some shredded paper. I've read on line that paper shreds make a great mulch around trees. I find that it's not so great and tends mat down into a hard paper mache. So I mixed it in with the shavings and that seemed to work decently....See MoreSanding solid oak table, seeking matte finish which will not darken
Comments (41)Thank you for the brand name! I used a water based matte seal on the underside of a leaf and didn’t like the way it yellowed the wood. It’s just the nature of the wood. So, I’ve been experimenting with stain layering and I’ve found a combination that I’m very excited about. Hopefully I’ll have the staining process done by the weekend. Busy week ahead with the kiddos! I’m going to look into that stripper you mentioned - doing the chairs (staining seats, painting the rest) is seeming like an increasingly interesting project. I’ll need stripper for that!...See MoreRed oak stair and white oak floors
Comments (63)Beth H. : - thanks so much for sharing those last two images. I'm working on a staircase in an addition to our old house and I've been using Houzz images to help the staircase maker understand what I'm seeking and hadn't seen those. And I agree, Houzz has chronic "control issues" when it comes to sharing images easily from other sites. I really think the owners have ambitions to take over from Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, let alone all the also-rans, ugh. It's a sharing world, Houzz - get with the program! Anyway, about those images you've shared; are they from Houzz? I tried clicking on them to see if they'd open a post, to no avail. Thanks!...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
