"I can't say I dislike them but I know they are fussy and prone to many disease" I read that description of redbuds from time to time in these forums and it's just not true. I don't know how that belief got started. Redbuds are quite tolerant of a variety of situations. Sure if they are unhappy in their location, it makes them disease prone but you can say the same thing for almost any other tree. I think they are strikingly beautiful. Their spring display of flowers is truly excellent and their lavender flower color is somewhat unique as are their heart-shaped leaves. The fall color is a excellent yellow that contrasts the bark color especially after a rain when the bark looks black. I have two redbuds on either side of an October Glory maple and both are doing great. Since my soil is very sandy, I've been dumping compost in that area for years and the two redbuds have responded with gigantic pancake-sized heart-shaped leaves. Both are very healthy and growing at a very fast rate. I also have an Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry that I would rate highly, too. It's in a situation that would be the closest to your situation. It gets full sun in the morning and then substantial shade in the afternoon although it's not dense shade. It's doing great. Nice show in the spring and another good foliage show in the fall. It suckers like crazy, though.

Randall, based on your location, here's the government poop on your soil (see below the demarcation). I'm guessing it's not red clay, but rather has some yellow clay in it. Does it look like the picture at the bottom of this post (farm near Raleigh)? I'd recommend fescue if you want a year-round green lawn. If your soil doesn't crust and get hard during the summer, you can use lime. Otherwise, use gypsum to break up the hard clay surface and Milorganite when it comes time to plant fescue seed. You should never have to dethatch, but aerating once or twice a year can help OM get deeper and work faster after you have a lawn going. You actually can top dress with granular lime right after seeding and don't worry about the nitrogen reaction. it won't matter that much. I have used peat moss or vermiculite as a top dressing also, but I have a commercial level Hunter irrigation system to keep that moist with regular spritzes. Fescue doesn't like to be covered too much, and even good seed can take three weeks to germinate (sprout). Straw helps, but I sometimes use a very lightweight insect cloth in 100-foot rolls to cover seed for the first three weeks. As soon as the grass is popping up, pull that off so the new sprouts don't "damp off." Look for the freshest seed you can find, direct from Oregon. Several sources on the internet when it comes to buying seed. Meanwhile, yes by all means find worms. I can't tell you how nice it is to see piles 4-inches in diameter of wormcastings in my yard this time of year, all over the place. One worm near a Pro-Spray head was about 10-inches long. He was a monster. We have little "cocoons" or egg thingees all over the raised vegetable garden, which has tons of azaleas, camellias and mountain laurels interspersed around additional raised beds for those good ol' veggies. We actually had tomatoes still two weeks ago! Anyway, the cocoons are future worms. Google earthworm images on the net so you can learn to recognize them. If you find them in the woods or anywhere, grab them and put them in your yard. Worms will find a way to organic material, even in clay soils, and they are indispensable. ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 - I realllllly would love to see them in color this year...I'm hoping to take another trip to the nursery to visit the trees again before they come to our house :-). Is that weird? LOL. I literally feel like I searched EVERYWHERE for these trees...I had landscapers calling growers in a bunch of states, and I called more nurseries than I can count in our surrounding states as well. I had no idea this cultivar would be so challenging to find! That is very helpful information about the fertilizer. I had a feeling it may not be necessary (and may do more harm than good), but wanted to ask here since everyone here knows so much more about this than I do! I want to make sure I don't inadvertently do more harm than good to these beauties! We'd prefer to have something where we don't have to manually water each tree, given that there are 10 trees...so leaving the hose on a slow trickle for a long time per tree would take a very long time! The trees will absolutely be mulched as soon as they are planted...I'm hoping this also helps give them a good start. Would I need to water them through the fall? Or mostly only in spring/summer if it's hot and dry? Our soil is definitely not sandy...this much I know. It definitely has clay content, but I wouldn't say it's solely clay or anything like that. I'll try your perk test idea and see what I come up with! And thank you for your link - another one I will bookmark and keep as a reference! :-)

That's very interesting, esp. considering our experience last fall. The autumn brilliance serviceberry in the front was still green when all or most of the other maples in the neighborhood had lost their leaves. It coincided with the oaks that turn red. It was one of the very last trees to turn. The one in the backyard changed about a week earlier for some reason, but was still late. The Dakota Pinnacle was the very last tree to turn and stuck out like a sore thumb with bright yellow leaves when everything else on the street was bare. We live near the Bailey Nursery headquarters where they have a bunch of trial plants surrounding their parking lots with labels, and i drive past a lot. Their Dakota Pinnacle birch also didn't change til everything else had lost leaves. And their Sunburst (which is extremely enormous, like an old oak) looked like ours, leaves turning a kind of olive/copper green then falling after frost and snow. They have something labeled as a Japanese maple but I think it's a Korean maple. Japanese maples aren't hardy here. That was one of the first trees to lose leaves.
