Will the roses blooming now (early winter) bloom again in the spring?

I live in southeastern PA and as many of you may know, the north east has had some unusually warm weather. Last week was probably our coldest week, with temperatures just under freezing in the morning. This week, the weather is back in the high 50s, and supposed to reach 60s this weekend.

Right now, this week, the roses are in full bloom in mid Decemeber, early winter. There are also some Cherrys in full bloom as well. Will they still bloom in the Spring?

If you want to get technical, winter solstice isn't for another 10 days. We are having a mild December, no question. One year the whole month of December was mild. I posted on this forum Knockout roses in full bloom the first week of January. Eventually the cold temps get here and everything goes dormant, no harm done.

Ever-blooming type roses bloom all year where the climate permits - being in bloom now will have no effect on next year's bloom. The cherry on the other hand does set a finite number of buds each summer, with any opening in autumn not being present to open the following spring. But usually most buds wait until spring, so that a concentrated display will still occur then.

If your cherry is 'Autumnalis Rosea' (sold incorrectly as 'Autumnalis') it usually has a fair number of flowers out in autumn, hence the name.

I think you should certainly try them and see. Are the ones still growing potted? As soon as your weather warms I would water and begin fertilizing to give them a good start. It is possible they will bloom earlier since they are already growing. How tall are they? My butterfly's are normally around 4 ft when they bloom. Hope this helps a little. James Maloy

Thank you Audrey! I'd be happy to enable you in whatever way I can to get 'The Fawn', also called 'The Faun', as well as by several other names in Europe. Heirloom Roses were the original importers and had the exclusive right to propagate it for several years, but that has apparently run out as several nurseries offer it now. I got my latest two from Burlington Roses in California. As mentioned it is a low grower that spreads out two or three feet horizonally so it's great at the front edge of a bed, very good also in a raised bed, or in a pot. I'll be looking forward to seeing pictures of your roses when they bloom. I wouldn't mind seeing some bush shots to get an idea of their growth habits. Flowering quince does alright in Austin. I am unsure about Houston. Fringe tree, Bridal wreath spirea, azaleas,Pink indigo bush, lorepetalum, Texas olive, Cross vine, viburnum obovatum, jessamine, confederate jasmine, other jasmine,bloodroot, winter blooming honey suckle, Blanco crab apple , rough leafed dogwood. camellia, bulbine, mock orange, Ajuga reptans You should ask this question on the Texas forum discussion board . there are a couple of posters there from the houston area that are into all things flowering perennials and they would know what does better in your soil conditions and rainfall. I am just guessing and trying to remember my mom;s neighbors garden.

Karen, If I could grow only one OGR it would be Marchesa Boccella. Marchesa Boccella (a.k.a., Jacques Cartier), is in a class by itself regarding flower beauty, abundance and repeat bloom (unusual for an OGR), and for its remarkable fragrance. If it didn't have such short necks, it would be a great vase rose. It is one rose that greatly benefits from growing on a rootstock, especially on multiflora, where it will grow more vigorously and almost grow like a little crab apple tree. I have seen MBs on multflora rootstocks that were 3.25' tall, 2'wide (MB is very columnar), with 4" diameter trunks with branching starting at 8" from the ground like a little crab apple tree, as I said. Remarkable! The trunks were not the rootstock, but MB's response to being on multiflora rootstocks. These particular MBs came from Pickering Nursery (closed). They grafted everything on very short multiflora shanks which could almost fool you into thinking their roses were bare root. Hardly an inch of shank could be seen between the scion and the start of the roots. These MBs I am referring to took about 12 yrs. (I was there when they were planted in 1990), to get to their proportions, trunk wise. They were in a public rose garden I had affiliation with years ago. At that 12 year age, in their prime and all their glory, they were removed and dumpstered to make way for modern roses....a decision by ARS people on the garden's board of directors. have they gone dormant... and have come out of it .... [which i doubt ...

or have they just not gone dormant yet ...

if the former .. should bloom fine in spring ...

if the latter ... maybe there will be a problem ...

there are at least 2 or 3 rose forums .... you might find the hardcore in one of those forums...

A few of my roses are blooming now. I am north of you near Allentown. They will likely go dormant in January. In April they will begin growth as usual with blooms in May. In warmer zones many roses bloom nearly all year round.

Even though December is statistically the coldest month ever-blooming roses are often still out at Christmas here, with January being about the only time of the year when roses don't seem to be doing anything - I've had problems with rooting rose cuttings in the ground and then never getting them transplanted because they were in leaf most of the time.

Spring for roses here is Feb. In fact a local weather professor says spring in general for us is Feb-Jul, with the annual summer warming and drying not fully overcoming the lingering winter wetness until Jul.

How about Dafadils? They are now coming up, and we still have January and February for cold whether

If it is just the daffodil foliage coming up they will be fine and will bloom in due course. If they are flowering that's it for this season. Once bloomed daffodils won't rebloom until they have had another season's growth and dormancy. Some of mine have already flowered and been eaten by slugs so they're finished until next spring.

Roses bloom on new wood so there will be new buds set for springtime blooming. Cherry trees are different, they bloom on the previous season's wood and if they are in full bloom now due to the mild winter we are having, there will be less or no blooms come springtime. Many plants are confused by the weather here in the NE.
