You could get have carpet cut and bound to to the size and shape of the room, or to exactly the area you want, like the 7x9 area below the doors. Since it wouldn't be installed, you could still remove it for cleaning or replacement. Do you want a combination of hard and soft floor surfaces? Maybe the hard side for play-do and water colors? (Though, good luck keeping them off the rug; don't ask me how I know this lol!)

Having carpet cut is a good idea as well, and would be much softer than a rug! The room is so small that I'll probably save the wet/messy play for the kitchen! But it would be fine to put the kitchen set on the hardwood. Or perhaps some shelving units along that wall.

Will the doors remain open into the room most of the time? Or will you open and close doors to enter each time you go in and out of the room? Will the doors go over the rug? Just considering options.

I might go with a wool wall to wall carpeting in a flat loop and have it cut to the shape of your room and professionally bound which is not expensive. Keeping the rug 12 inches from the walls all the way around. Larger floor play area if your kids are little and will maximize the size of the room.

If the doors are to remain open into the room all the time I might just do away with the doors as the room is smaller. You could get the doors and just not have them hung until you move in and see how the room lives. That way your cased opening is not marred by door stops and hinges and if you prefer to have the doors open out you can decide later.

I do think we'll leave the doors open nearly all of the time (though my daughters may close them while playing in the room to have "privacy"!). The only other time I can see us wanting to close them is if we are having guests over as the room is right off the entrance (though we are new to the area and likely won't be entertaining anyone other than family!).

I think I'd put a good sized area rug in the lower part of the room starting about where the left door is open to in your drawing (I don't think the door has to swing all the way to the wall -sorry I can't read the dimensions). That would give the kids a large cozy area with a rug and some hardwood floor in the other part of the room. I know my grandson and his friends like to play on the rug, but often seek out a bare place on the hardwoods to draw or color - when they want to stretch out to do so, or play with toys that don't work well on the carpet. Lots of building toys, wheeled toys, etc work better on hardwoods.

I would consider the type of play and how you expect to have the room furnished. If you have a small table and chairs for coloring, table games and such, you may not want a rug under the table and might just put a smaller rug at the other end -- with floor toys or reading chairs. Smaller rugs are easier to find in kid friendly designs,, less expensive and easier to replace when needs change.

Really depends a lot on the age and activities. USe of the room is more important than the size, especially with your angled wall.
