Holiday Gifts for Gardeners
Comments (7)Going on the theme of bulb forcing, last year I found that Russells Garden Center in Wayland and Cataldos Nursery in Littleton carried inexpensive hyacinth forcing vases in different colors. I ended up having a few of these vases and hyacinth bulbs on hand for last minute gifts which worked well. Also Russells has a great selection of amaryllis bulbs (some unusual types). Yes Prairie good idea. I also like the Well Tended Perennial Garden book. A great idea for both someone new to gardening and experienced. A rare book that is valuable to both audiences. I too have a few books on my list. One I've taken out a few times from the library is: Gardens to Go: Creating and Designing a Container Garden by Sydney Eddison and Steve Silk The book has such beautiful photos and is a great treat to look at time and time again. Comments (25)Just reading this now and enjoying ALL the ideas. My husband's family used to do the pull a name out of the hat at some summer get-together. Not everyone has to be there...his mom would send out the names to all. So my side started trying this too. It works out fine since we all get along so well. But in some families it might be tough if you get someone's name with whom you don't get along that well. It can be a good opportunity, or just a problem. I love the idea of making things - we tried that too but for everyone (or at least a family gives to another family something they made). In the end, you probably need to consider all ideas and customize. One thing is certain - only a handful of well-off family members who LOVE to shop and give will not be happy with any suggestion. Most of the time, I hear over and over that everyone found it to be much less stressful - financial and time wise. One thought is to talk the idea over with a single sibling, or parent, and see what they think. Coming up with a plan as a family is a good thing though. So if you suggest the idea, leaving part of how to go about it might be a good thing. Suggesting adults draw names, and kids still get something from the adults is one way to go. College aged "kids" can be adults, or they can concentrate on the little kids. But you might get more cooperation/interest if you give them some say in how to go about this. Good luck - hope to hear how it went!...See MoreA holiday gift when you don’t know the persons religion..

If someone gave me a Starbucks gift card, I would regift it. If you live in a small village there might not even be a Starbucks where you live. In fact, I regift all gift cards that I receive. Personally, I think that cash is the best gift in this case, as it will be the most useful gift. You can put it in a very nice card and hand write a personal note to tell him how much you appreciate him. If I were the store owner, this would mean to most to me. I see this as somewhat like giving a tip, as you might to your pool maintenance person or house cleaner....See MoreHoliday gifts for service people
Comments (53)The stories are so good! Forie, my hairdresser certainly drinks booze. I only go every few months for a color and trim and she talks on and on about the different places she and her husband frequent along with pictures. She dresses like a 16 yr old in tight dresses, crazy hair. She's funny and wild. I wouldn't have the slightest idea what booze to get her as she talks about different cocktails and drinks I have no idea what they are. I give her $100.00 and a box of Godiva chocolates. My trash collector is very nice. There are two guys in the truck and one who dumps the barrels into the truck. They come around 10am and if I'm outside he always chats and I've gotten to know him. He's just a really nice guy. He takes things from me that he isn't supposed to take. He brings my barrels up to my garage and I always tip him and give him more than the two guys (I've never spoken to) who are inside the truck. I give the guys in the truck, $20.00 each and my helpful guy $50.00 and a small bottle of Rum. My mailman is also nice, friendly, we chat and he also will take things I should drive to the PO. He will weigh the box in his truck and print a sticker. He goes out of his way to be helpful. I give him $50.00 and a small bottle of Irish Whiskey. Cleaning woman gets double what I pay for cleaning. I give her a bottle of Rose wine and a box of chocolates. I posted the question because I sometimes wonder if I am giving enough to those who truly make my life easier. Loved all the stories! Jane...See Moresweetsarahbeth
