Comments (15)I think I saw the palms you're speaking of at a WM near here, as well. I really believe they're Chamaedorea erumpens, aka 'Bamboo Palm'. I purchased mine at WM in the early 90's, and it looked exactly like those being sold. They are in a juvenile stage, so they may not resemble photos you'll find on the internet, unless you can find photos of juvenile plants. If you do have one of these, they're very easy to care for. They tolerate low light very well, and will even grow in low light (unlike many plants that simply 'maintain' themselves in lower light). They also tolerate a lot of neglect! Right now, and for the past several years, mine is a few feet from a west window where it receives filtered indirect light....See MoreWhat's the best way to harvest Red Russian kale?
Comments (4)To some degree, it may make a difference where you live. (Just one more reason why it's helpful for you to include your zone in every post.) In my zone, Kale grows all winter long, so I would not want to cut the entire plant. I harvest the larger lower leaves and leave the smaller top leaves to continue to grow. In this manner, I harvest continually from fall to spring from the same plants. Last year, I actually used Red Russian as the background of my pansy planting of Ultima Morpho pansies. It was a beautiful bed all winter and we ate from it too. But, if you live farther north, it might be better to harvest the entire plant. Red Russian Kale may just be my favorite green of all, and I like nearly all of them. It's delicious. Enjoy!...See MoreLooking for tree/shrub/plant 6-10' tall, 2-4' wide, likes shade
Comments (20)Be sure to leave room for structural maintenance and repair access. Try star jasmine, it likes shade and - unlike the much overused evergreen clematis for instance - doesn't shoot out long rapid growing stems that quickly get away from you. Or have large leaves that produce a coarse, often overbearing texture. There are plantings of star jasmine all over Seattle and all independent outlets in the area stock it. The only significant drawback to planting this choice this far north is it being hardy to something like 15 degrees F. But Cliff Mass thinks the local winters have gotten warmer. Also star jasmine seems to have a problem with conspicuous discoloration of the leaves in full hot sun planting positions. But it wouldn't be subjected to that in your situation....See Morechuckwagon009
