Comments (4)there are many kinds of plants that are evergreen .... and many forums to cover such ... shrubs are usually considered flowering shrubs ... it seems you are looking for conifers.. in the shrub forum.. yes.. its a common tern.. but i dont know many of the conifer nuts who appreciate spring flowering shrubs ... so they dont hang out over here ... ergo ... you might want to go ask at the conifer forum.. and peruse some of the hundreds of pix over there.. or dont.. post wherever you like ken...See MoreLooking for a small tree. 6-10' tall, 6-8' wide.
Comments (3)Missouri Botanical Garden has a page on it. From their description: Zone: 5 to 8 Height: 8.00 to 12.00 feet Spread: 6.00 to 10.00 feet Bloom Time: June to October Now, does that look like something you might like? Richard. Here is a link that might be useful: Their page on it....See Morelooking for a tall plant or shrub for corner
Comments (10)Thanks for the ideas! As you may have guessed, I'm new to gardening, so I have trouble envisioning things like how plants will look together, when they will bloom, etc. I love the look of the elderberry. I will do some more research on that. Even if it's not perfect for this spot, we are landscaping our front yard this year. Maybe I can work it in. Have you had problems with it suckering? Those are some nice companions for columbines, CMK. I particularly like the Joe-Pye-Weed (though I would never be able to call it that in front of DH, he'd pull it right out). I'm not a huge fan of delphinium foliage either, but I have one plant that had beautiful blooms on it last year and this year it's a good 3 feet or more tall and just as wide. I'm kind of enamored with it. I've also heard they are fairly short-lived, so maybe I should just toss out that idea. I would have to see the Coral Berry in person. I couldn't find a good picture of the whole shrub. I also love the idea of a hydrangea. I've almost bought one a few times at the nursery, but my soil is very alkaline, and I'm worried I would have to baby it to get it to grow at all....See MoreLooking for 8-15' tall, 2' wide plant for north side
Comments (8)It is exposed to the sky (i.e. there is no significant overhang of the roof or other plants). Soil is the typical clay soil of the mid-Peninsula. I use drippers, so it can stay pretty moist as needed. I wasn't thinking of a climber per se, but I suppose a philodendron might work. We have a philodendrom selloum in our backyard that's done well (on the north side of the south fence), and also some monstera deliciosa that do all right. How fast do these two species climb? I assume they'd need to be attached directly to the post, and not just climb the house or steel wiring. Any other ideas out there? Perhaps there is a shade-friendly banana? Maybe Darjeeling (Musa sikkimensis) or Rajapuri (Musa acuminata)? I could always cut the leaves that run into the wall....See Morejohnaberdeen
