Pond plants in wet containers: Will my plan for the summer work?

My plan is to try and grow a few in containers, though that limits my choice to some degree. Hybrids of Canna Indica are my first successful examples. The plants are erect and grow above the water, so they don't need a pond over which the leaves will rest. They don't even mind dry soil for a short while. So, my basic plan is to grow the plants from seed and later grow them in containers.

The erect types (Canna, Thalia and others) will be grown from seed. Besides Cannas which are easy to grow this way, what other plants can I grow from seed without a pond, and how would I do that?

For the ones which prefer a wet soil at all times, is that good to place the pots on a tray filled with water? Does standard potting soil work well?

And, how easy is it to go from there to container ponds like these ones?
