I think you should narrow it down a bit in order to get good suggestions. Do they have a lawn mower? Are they interested in outdoor cooking/barbecue? Is the house new or does it need repair? Are they gardeners?

I'm happy for them, and I am sure they are delighted to have their own gome.

Good points. They have been renting a house where they had all the gardening and BBQ supplies. I just can't seem to come up with something that would be more personal than a set of towels or something like that.

A home improvement gift card is always nice for those little things that seem to need to be replaced. I also like the lawn mower idea unless they will have a lawn service.

One thing that I like to give new homeowners IS a nice towel wardrobe in the colors of their choice. I love for my towels to match, though, lol. I can appreciate that it might be a little impersonal.

Of course, you can always ask them! I'm not at all sure that I would have wanted my mother and dad to pick out my decorative items, if you know what I mean.

A flowering tree for the yard. A nursery gift certificate. A beautiful bird bath. For this time of year, maybe a live Christmas tree that they can plant in their yard after Christmas.

When we bought our home decades ago, my mother gave us a folding step stool (like a 2-3 step size). We must have used it 30 years before it finally broke.

I was going to suggest a painting of their house, too. I also like the idea of a nice step ladder or maybe a nice tool box or work table for the garage.

How about something they both love from your house? An heirloom, a favorite chair, a pitcher, a picture?

Here are some things that are appropriate for different people. The trick is matching up the present to the people who will receive it:

Literally "warming": A cord of firewood. A crockpot/Nexco roaster/microwave whatever small appliance they need. A beautiful teakettle (the kind you put on the stove), an electric blanket, space heaters for the bathrooms (if needed), a fan for distributing the hot/cold air, a quilt, a fancy comforter or duvet, a cashmere blanket.

Kitchen: A Vita-Mix, KitchenAid mixer, or Cuisinart. A breadbox so they'll know when something's bigger than it. A tablecloth (especially one that's easy to wash).

Entertaining: A tablecloth (heirloom quality for special occasions). A full set of barware (monogrammed?). A beautiful platter or other serving piece. A large tray. A nutbowl. Pitchers and/or vases.

Exterior: Patio furniture (or a single bench -- or if there's a proper tree for it, a bench that circles the tree). Outdoor lighting. A personalized address sign or mailbox or welcome mat. A tree.

Our son bought his first house this summer. They had been living in his one bedroom bachelor pad for years. So here are some of the ideas we had and rejected and some we bought: patio/yard furniture; picnic table; his brother gave him a $200 gift certificate to Home Depot; his aunts, uncles, sister, BIL and parents are giving him attic insulation installation (the celulose insulation in the attic was pretty much gone. Her aunt and grandmother gave them a mower. Long extension ladder.

A visa or master charge gift card where they can use it anywhere.

How about a sign to hang by the front door with their last name on it unless it's a safety issue for them.

Telescoping flagpole with a solar light. We got our son and dil one for their new home as we figured it was a luxury that they would not have spent money on. They loved that we thought of it. Home Depot cards are wonderful as well.

Do you have a family heirloom that they have admired that you would part with? Nice serving pieces if they entertain. Special sheet set..something nicer than they would get themselves. Besure to get solid color...that is a neutral..white is always best. A handmade quilt.

imacamper, I think you've made a great decision! I hope they take the gift card and go directly to buy pretty and comfortable outdoor furniture. Outdoor living is a big part of what my husband and I enjoy so much about our home.
