What's the best oil change deal out there?

I normally go to Midas for my oil change. They
charge $19.99 for a basic oil change. But the most important thing for
me is that they give your car a courtesy check. With this check you get a
form where they tick off any problem areas they detect on your car. The
problem, however, is that my local Midas will no longer let me bring my
own oil for the oil change. I have an old VW that needs heavy oil
(20W50).

So I have been looking around for another place where I can get my oil change.

So far Monro Muffler Brake & Service seems to be the next best
option. They charge $24.99 for a basic oil change. And they will let me
bring my own oil. And they claim that they will give my car a courtesy
check.

Does anyone know of a better deal? :)

I don't look for the cheapest service, but the most competent. I want an experienced mechanic who won't over- or under- tighten bolts, leave off parts, and pay attention. There are too many bad stories about the cheap places.

I can't imagine letting any of those incompetents work on my car for free. And you are worried about the best deal? Worry about their competence. I do my own and one of the businesses I own is a car shop. They won't work on mine as it isn't the brand they work on so I do my own in that shop. The service manager of that shop would refuse to make an appointment for anyone calling that asks "how much is x?". Another business I own is an auto parts store specializing in one brand. Perhaps 2-3% of the shops buying parts are competent. It is scary out there!

Forget the price, worry about their competence. FWIW, a few owners of places like you mentioned bring their car to the shop I own as they know better than to let their idiots work on their car.

your pressure washer pump probably similar to mine. It also has oil in it? (check you owners manual for servicing requirements). I would also check the oil level and the condition of the pump oil also. If I make mess I just use the pressure washer to clean it off after pre-ventive maintenance and let it sun dry or blow dry it with my blower. If it's got screw in pipe threaded drain plug you can extend it out by buying fittings at your local hardware store to plumb it out for easy access and draining. Or add the nipple and hose. Briggs makes SGE's to fit several applications. the manufacture of the pressure pumps picks engine in there price range and profit margins. There engineers are the ones to blame not briggs or other engine manufactures that make engines for several applications. It probably added 50 cents to the cost and they figured most don't change the oil anyway.

What's the best way of dealing with mold/mildew in grout lines?

If you are sure that the shower tile was installed correctly, over a waterproof layer, your problem is that the grout is staying damp between showers. The mold is living off of soap scum, dead skin cells and other grime. Clean the shower thoroughly. Use any commercial mildew remover ... follow the directions and repeat the application a couple days later. Do not use the shower between applications. To keep it away: Before you use the shower again, after clearing out all the mold, let it dry thoroughly and seal it with grout sealant. Follow the directions exactly, and seal the entire shower. Repeat as needed. Use the bathroom vent fan after every shower. Don't leave things hanging against the tiles. That traps moisture.

Yes, the co-op membership fee is on a sliding scale between free and $20 year. It's also a non-profit organization that's been around since 1982. They advocate a lot for those in need, and it's a group I'd support without hesitation. $20 is nothing considering the annual cost of fuel. There's also a 3 year $45 membership rate which I signed up for. Suggest you consider looking into it more. Despite the goodwill of the company, I'm always on the lookout for a better long term discount offering.

I'm redecorating my MBR this spring, and the focal point will be an antique french country armoir. I dropped into get the local Salvation Army on Saturday to get me weekly "fix" and found this reproduction french commode/dresser. It's oak, very well made, drawers work great and in excellent structural shape. Finish needs work. It was marked down to $35, so I hesitantly decided to buy it. (The reason I hesitated is because I now have three vintage dressers at home needing cosmetic uplifts, and DH does not appreciate seeing more strays coming in the door!). But here's the best part, as I was waiting in line to pay for the dresser and a couple other items, a rather cool looking leather bound cookbook near the cashier caught my eye. It had copper edged pages, a silk cord, and contained menus from famous restaurants around the world, along with lots of recipes and photos. Well, even though I hardly cook at all anymore, something about this book was begging me to take it home. I paid $2.99 for it. As it turns out, it's a first edition collectible cookbook, and is listed on the internet for between $50-$175 depending on condition. I've decided to sell it--so it easily paid for everything else I bought that day!

With a brand like VW or Honda, sometimes your local dealer is competitive with the quick lube shops. They may charge a bit more, but their inspections are much better and may head off developing problems. Also, you will get the benefit of recalls and be informed of any updates. My Honda dealer charges about a dollar more than the Valvoline shop, but includes a car wash and vacuum of the floor mats. They do this so they can keep track of your vehicle and encourage you to do the manufacturer's recommended service work.
