Got the last of this year's roses today

After my two largish orders to Beales' and Trevor White in the UK which I've written about before, I got the last of this year's orders today by courier from a local nursery.

Summer Damask (R. damascena), a second Pat Austin and the found 'Chios island rose', supposedly a repeating violet OGR which I've written about in here before and which I'll report about in due time. All these as budded bareroots. I also got a Banksiea Lutea as a flimsy looking own root band along with a couple of tiny non-rose shrub bands; Chimonanthus praecox (Wintersweet) and Kerria japonica. These complete this year's acquisitions, at a total of 35 euros, thank you very much. Everything is already potted up, I've put a new chain on my jap Echo brand with carving blade pruning chainsaw, ready for tomorrow's olive tree pruning session and I'm enjoying my Greek style grappa on this sunny afternoon, along with local spicy small red round peppers stuffed with cheese. Cheers!

Cheerful outlook. Not that I don't sometimes agree with you! But fortunately, there are roses to compensate.

I've been thinking of planting another oak, Quercus douglasii. I have a spot where it could fit. It's a very drought tolerant tree so it could do well if we do indeed become drier here over the next few decades. Planting trees cheers me up.

As for the roses, I stopped buying more unless as replacements for ones that die. I'm quite content with my reduced size garden. It's quite big, as big as I can realistically manage.

Cheers !.... I hope you enjoyed your little afternoon tea, Greek style.....

...I rather hope I don't get to see that kind of 'tomorrow'.... but people adapt and gardeners will still garden... new roses produced....

...I've sometimes thought about Banksia lutea, but if I was so inclined, I might be tempted by the 'alba plena' version that's become available....- I'm surprised you haven't got it - meanwhile, I'm thinking of ordering 'The Alexandra Rose'... a single flowered Austin, to replace my Mutabilis, ....it looks more manageable...

Tammy - I also think I'm pretty lucky with my DH.. he's actually the one that wanted the roses! I'm too lazy to want to have to put A LOT of care into anything I buy so that's why I've always shyed away from roses as they are notoriously hard to care for... at least that's my tiny amount of experience with them ;-) Which isn't much LOL. Guess I'm going to find out just how much care they truly require... although I told DH since he wanted the roses HE can look after them! I am lucky in another way though in that he didn't complain about all the money he spent on the flowers I wanted... he looks at it that it's "our" money not just his and I have every right to spend it as if I was the one that was working... I feel guilty about it sometimes and that's why I've been wanting to work but he's not too worried about it. ttfn Cheryl.

I am taking it nice and easy with this plant, I had to learn how to handle it in the pot so I could maybe better deal with it in the ground or a larger pot. I am not sure I want to chance it in the ground and lose it to the cold temps. As long as it is thriving the way it is, I will leave it be a while longer. It did sit for a long time not doing much at all then all of a sudden BAM !! Its been blooming for seemingly months now.

I'm glad to read that hoovb thinks this rose isn't very fragrant. I bought it because it was described as having an 'award winning' scent. I can smell more or less nothing. In other ways it is a good rose, however. It produces many flowers and grows into a nice bushy shrub. The leaves are 'leathery' by rose standards, and therefore not as susceptible to pests as some others. Here in SE England I spray for blackspot and mildew, but the rose doesn't need a great deal of artificial help. The petals 'spot' in wet weather but that is their only fault. The colour fades quickly in strong sunshine, which may be more of a problem for growers in sunnier climates.
