I thought that Fox hunting was illegal.

I think it has been illegal in Great Britain since 2005, where historically the purpose and goal was to catch and kill the fox. It is not illegal in the United States, where it is about the chase. As soon as the fox goes to ground, the hounds are called off and cast out again to try to find another scent.

On the Thanksgiving hunt, perhaps because it was warm and dry (which make the scent hard to follow) they didn't scent or see a fox the entire time they were hunting. But even when they don't see a fox, they are still riding through land like this:

Grandson and his dad, enjoyed, few years back, the preliminaries to the fox hunt on his grandparents estate, in Virginia. Grandson still talks about the experience.
