#1 Lambsquarters....some grow this on purpose and eat as a green. VERY nutritious weed indeed :) #2 Looks like Ground Ivy...Glechoma hederaceae (Lamiaceae-Mint Family). A nasty perennial weed with creeping stems especially when it gets into your lawn! #3 Elm....possibly Siberian Elm...Ulmus pumila...very invasive reseeding tree! I have a volunteer that I should have taken care of last year :( #4 Sumac species usually have some type of serrated leaf margine. Knotweeds usually have cordate (heart-shaped) leaves. I'm stumped....there are many plants/trees weedy or not that have compound leaves with smooth margins. #5 Mirablis (4 O'clock) Try this Gallery of Weeds of Ontario...broadleaf weeds Hope it helps find it. It may or may not even be a weed? Here is a link that might be useful: Ontario Weed Gallery-Broadleaf

Speaking of birds, I just had quite an interesting encounter. I am trying to incorporate some very nice used carob bricks into my BBQ which is already built into some very large rocks adjacent to my pond. It is very challenging to try and meld the two materials together. I am totally engrossed trying to figure it out and out of nowhere comes a loud whoosh and a thud and an immature yet still very sizeable bald eagle flopping around at my feet. I'm not sure what attracted him, perhaps my koi but maybe he dove, saw me and tried to swoop out. He flew right into the glass rail of my deck and knocked himself cookoo. I calmly talked him through it until the cobwebs subsided and he was able to fly off to hunt another day. You talk about an adrenaline rush!!!!!! Here's a picture of the BBQ I was working on. I had just demo-ed the fake brick off the front when the eagle hit the glass panel on the deck stairs. Here is a link that might be useful:

Thanks Konrad. Its a pretty dark picture. After searching for images on the internet, I think I'm inclined to think its a young starling. I read that both cowbirds and starlings walk instead of hop, so I'm thinking starling. There have been several adult starlings around, but never with this little one. Maybe I'll try to lighten the pic. I should have done that to start with.

Thanks for your help...I had no idea whatsoever. I've never seen one before, and certainly never seen a male or anything else like it. But I just looked it up and it's not a nice bird to have around. I think it went away and I sure hope it doesn't come back. Here is a link that might be useful: Cowbird eggs in nestboxes -- Sialis.org
