I would have probably tried this first, with dryer sheets I didn't care for. But.. if you let it absorb/marinate for a few days, I wonder... if it would be enough ;)

Okay, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille... maybe if you added a little heat, the wax from the sheets would transfer into the softener even better. Just a thought.

Just reading the title I knew what you were doing Larsi, I expected it ROFL...I haven't a clue if this will work, it should given enough time as your just extracting the perfume.

"Give it up" was EXACTLY what I was thinking. I agree with you about the dryer sheets. I bought a ton of them. I had never thought about infusing liquid FS with them though. Why don't you just use dryer sheets?

I personally don't ever want to see Larsi give it up..he's chasing a dream and I think its great.

I chase a different dream LOL phosphated detergent LOL and for me in my area is impossiable to find. Some of you seem to find stores loaded with it..not me.

This morning I opened my Mason jar experiment, and while it does not smell exactly like Classic AF Downy liquid, the scent is quite similar, albeit much softer. I like it. I think for those who like light scents, this might be a great idea to infuse unscented softener with the exact scents you prefer.

I might never, ever smell my Original April Fresh Softener again, but I WILL NOT GIVE UP. Lol

MamaP.....I went to Smart and Final yesterday (place where I found the Phosphated Tide ;) and I rummaged and huffed thru their Downy April Fresh Dryer sheets (they had A LOT).....way in the back I found TWO boxes (old, new stock), just like you sent me!! YAY!!! I thank you again for sending them to me, I had no idea they still "existed". :) You ignited a new hunt for me.

@ elcamino...My Miele dryer says very clearly DO NOT USE DRYER SHEETS. The way the internal venting is done, dryer sheets get sucked up and stuck and they can overheat the dryer. Also, I do not like the way the lint screen will get "coated" and the performance of the dryer is not at it's peak. Also, the waxes in dryer sheets eventually build up in the dryer venting, that leads outside! I love putting the sheets though in my athletic shoes and underwear and sock drawers!!

larsi...I get it now. FS seems to be a lose-lose battle. Liquid FS gunks up my dispenser, and I have to give it an extensive cleaning a couple of times a month even though I use liquid FS sparingly and always dilute it with water. I have to clean my LG dryer sensor frequently as waxy build-up does affect the sensor; my dryer will shut down too quickly and not dry my clothes. What's a girl to do? I am quite interested in your experiment. I want to send it to P&G just to let them know that they are driving people to crazy lengths just to get some decently scented product.

I think some pictures are in order as I keep picturing mason jars with dryer sheets stored in a dark closet...like canned homemade pickles.

Mine has been soaking for close to an hour now..no scent change at all yet.

Now I'm wondering. Lol. Dryer sheets are waxy. Synthetic scents get heated over 160 in soaps. I would try soaking dryer sheets in very hot water then mixing that with your unscented FS if it smells right. LFS is a fat. You need a solvent maybe.

Darn. Now I have to go out, and look for these Dryer Sheets. I want them now :P

Larsi...how's your brew working? Mine has been formenting for 12 hours and it still smells like unscented Downy lol...I think Sandys right about soaking the dryer sheets in hot water first...I'm going to boil some distilled water and pour about half a cup over a couple sheets and see how it works..it can than be added to the Downy Free.

Mine soaked overnight, and it still "smells" a little like unscented Downy, but it for sure has a light, soft scent of the classic AF Downy sheets.

I ended up adding 2 more sheets for about 12 hours....so like 7 or 8 total, I think.

If you boil water and pour it over the sheets, won't the scent come off in the water? Will you then add the water to the Downy?? Maybe Sandy is on to something. I will try this right now. LOL

Yes the scent should extract into the water...than run the scented water thru a dehydrater and scrape the dry particles into your Downy Free. ..LOL.. just joking...just use a small amount of water so the Downy won't be too watered down.

I brought a pan of water on the cooktop to very hot, but not boiling or even near boiling. I placed 4 AF Downy sheets in the water, and the let them cool enough for me to squeeze the dryer sheets. The liquid turned milky and was quite slippery/slimy. I stirred the liquid and dumped it into my Downy unscented softener bottle. It does not smell like classic AF Downy, but for sure similar. It is soft, warm and very gentle. I would for sure like more scent, but I think this method would be amazing for those who like a soft scent!!

As I was doing this, I actually acknowledged the level of Cray Cray I was at. I mean, I felt I should be checking myself in somewhere for some sort of mental evaluation. LOL

Honestly larsi, every post is like watching a season finale...I can't wait to find out what happens next. I second sandy. Everyone is crazy, you just have a productive outlet for yours. What about using a double boiler to gently melt the wax without scorching it, and then adding the unscented in the double boiler? This way, there is no water dilution and the wax should evenly distribute with the unscented FS.

Its so much easier just to tape the dryer sheets to the ceiling fan. Larsi I know where you live you must have ceiling fans ...lol

MamaP...Omg, we do, we do have ceiling fans. What a great idea. AF Downy classic dryer sheet scent gently wafting thru the house as super classy dryer sheets are scotch taped to the ceiling fan blades.

Larsi, you can set a whole new fad in the homes of the Rich and Famous...before long it will be in everyone who is anyone's home, it will be the center of conversation at cocktail parties. AND everyone will decide what invites to accept based on the Hostess/Hosts choice of Ceiling Fan Dryer Sheets. Larsi's Get Togethers will be the Prime invite, nobody but nobody has REAL April Fresh but Larsi. LOL!!!

PS....use custom designs of Duct Tape....very classy.

I have used a piece of a dryer sheet in the vacuum bag/bin before. Has a nice smell while vacuuming. Also put them on the heat/air return filters but mostly never smell them when it is running. I guess it is just too much surface to cover.

If your really creative... you can stuff entire boxes of dryer sheets, in a air vent. I'm not sure how dryer sheets on a ceiling fan would look.

Mich...you can not rain on my parade LMFAO.. you know exactly how dryer sheets would look on a fan...CLASSY!!! And use a bright patterned duct tape and OMG...LOL

My mom puts dryer sheets in the air vents. Maybe she's not crazy?
