ortho.... SAFE????
Comments (23)"Please examine the information on Chlorothalonil at the site and let us know what bias you find." How about listing the dangers of an ingredient 1259.74 times as strong as what a home gardener applies? (97% vs 0.077%.) korney19, i thought this was a friendly forum, for people to grow and learn as gardners. somewhere early on this changed from a friendly question to something aggressive. i have stated and re-stated that every person is entitled their opinion. the purpose for the post was for opinions... i previously stated that i acknowledge that you are a supporter of this product... i previously stated that i am by far not organic. on the organic forum i stated i am new to organic gardening and that i usually take the easy way out with sprays.... this was just a discussion not a personal attack. Sarah, I'm sorry you feel it's any type of personal attack, it isn't. I've used the product in question, as well as researched it and read much info about it for the last 7-10 years, and made my decision, as have many others... unfortunately, you've made your decision on it in 7-10 hours... actually much less. That in my opinion is jumping to conclusions too soon. There's an extremely high chance that the purchased food you've been eating for the last umpteen years has been in contact with chlorothalonil, as well as your parents' and maybe their parents' food too. It may be the most widely used fungicide, and the most accepted too. You searched the meaning of TOXIC and said it meant POISON. All I asked was which is worse, "practically not poisonous" (the Daconil) or "very low poison" (the product you used instead.) To me, "very low poison" sounds worse. I also felt you should have asked the questions in the Tomato Forum where you'd get more reasonable unbiased answers and opinions--you've asked about your Early Blight tomatoes so far in the Vegetable Forum and the Organic Forum, yet not the Tomato Forum... if you break your foot, do you see your family doctor, or a foot specialist? Please forgive me if I seem to be harsh, but it seems like you're buying into the organic agenda. As for this forum being friendly, ALL GW forums should be, but I find it to be a little uneasy here on educated gardeners who use manmade products... not everyone can make their own compost, use IPM for pests, Bt, cow manure, straw mulch, etc. Maybe if the product you bought doesn't work as expected, you'll ask in the Tomato Forum. It already costs more, and I believe also needs twice as much per application as Daconil. It's also relatively new and there's not a lot of data and tests on it yet... who knows? maybe it'll cause frogs in landlocked stagnant ponds to have cataracts or something! Good luck with your gardening this year & no hard feelings. Mark...See MoreOrtho 'ecosense brand*' slug killer?
Comments (20)I was tempted to buy a different Ortho ecosense product. But then I wondered if I really wanted my money going to a company that encourages so many uninformed people to pollute our planet. While I am not trying to encourage supporting one brand over another, as long as you are purchasing stuff in a bottle/box you will always be sending money to companies who do things you can't trust. There is no plant on this planet that uses more phosphorus than nitrogen or potassium. Not one. Shop the fertilizer aisle and organic/synthetic makes no difference. You will readily find products offering more phosphorus than anything else in spite of the fact that no plant on earth uses that much P. Why? Simple. People think high P ferts organic or synthetic makes more flowers/fruits. It isn't even remotely true, but the myth is so prevalent that makers of products cater to the myth rather than risk losing a sale trying to educate the customer. Even your favorite company is serving up what consumers demand rather than what they actually need. Organic/synthetic makes no difference here. It's just the profit motive in effect. Neptune Harvest does it, Dyna-Gro does it. Worm's way does it, Miracle Grow does it. I am, like you, uncomfortable with labeling laws in the US as it regards products. I don't want to see labels saying 99% inert ingredients, I want to know what they actually are. Unfortunately the law doesn't require this and nobody volunteers this info organic or synthetic. If you buy it in a bottle, box or bag, nobody is going to tell you what all is in it because they don't have the legal obligation to do so. Organic/synthetic makes no difference in this regard....See Moreortho or bayer?

Comments (3)Triforine (No "l") No big deal, but if you should decide to look it up on line to learn more about the chemical, you'll have better luck if you have the right spelling. :-) Whatever chemical you decide to use, please read the label carefully, and follow the instructions. (For example, more is not better.) Good information on the chemical profile and health hazards (yes, there ARE health hazards) see link below: Jeri Here is a link that might be useful: Triforine Chemical Profile...See MorePatty W. zone 5a Illinois
