Thoughts on a cold, rainy afternoon
Comments (2)Simon, your gardens are really lovely, and I especially like what you've done with the rocks. Rocky slopes can be a real challenge, but they can be such an asset if the right plants are used. Plant what should be there rather than what you want there (hopefully, it comes out to the same thing!). I still consider myself a novice gardener, but I've learned not to be afraid to yank out things that aren't producing or I've decided aren't as nice as I once thought. I've seen posts on other forums with people mentioning how appalled they were to see someone stroking and handling plants at a garden center! Imagine! LOL I have a long way to go, but gardening is such a wonderful hobby, and I look forward to the day when I can really see some progress and know I've created a wonderful private oasis. I'll get back to you on that in 25 years! Keep up the good work!...See MoreRainy day, what to do? post some photos from Ontario...
Comments (36)What a great way to spend a rainy day Jo. Your garden is looking lush and lovely! Trifecta, Dark Shadows and Jujen are getting a lot of deserved attention but they all look fabulous. Great shots of minis and monsters alike. My London Fog was hit by the late frost and has some damaged leaves. It is quite likely that is why yours seems more fragile this year(?) I have always thought it a great performer considering the percentage of white in the leaves. Your non-hostas are happy looking too. lol! Rodgersia is a favorite of mine. Very smart and nice of you to donate some hostas to your neighbors. Community beautification - love it. Thank you for the tour, the rain did not stop here until noon today....See MoreA few rainy day photos ...
Comments (49)@ Roselee, Yes, I can see the Milky Way and I have some favorite lightning bug sightings that were down right jaw dropping and other worldly.. I am remembering one because the person I saw it with , died this week. We were down on the banks of the Pedernales. we spent a sunset swimming under Ol'Glory, a immense cypress that survived the big floods of the 30's and 50"s. It must be in a sweet spot. The many roots of dead Cypress structures created glorious Rorschach structures in the glassy still waters. we cooked our meals and watched the stars come out and there were millions of them in the moonless night. then the millions of lightning bugs came out all over the undergrowth of the opposite bank down to the river. All were reflected in the glassy waters , stars, bugs, all together, just a vague dividing line between the changing dimensions. It went on for hours. WE slowly waded in till thigh deep in the stars and dove into the reflected lightning bugs and then floated on our backs looking up into the convergence of the sparkling trees and stars like fat bloated water bugs, arms outstretch still and quiet. . This supplanted the last amazing sighting of watching one of those amazing multi-level towering Texas storms sprouting a constant hair of lightning from its upper levels , snaking in the convolutions of green cloud, lighting up like glow worms and snakes in the clouds depths. Out of the lower levels, tree lightning snaked outwards for miles above our head,. and again millions of lightning bugs answering their brethren of the skies. Also an amazing sighting. They definitely rank among the memories that I treasure that have made me forget to close my gaping mouth. Amazing things can be encompassed by "Golly miss Molly" Thank you guys for making me delve into the memory banks....See MoreDisease, nutrient deficiency or due to a few cold rainy days?
Comments (24)The potting mixes like Miracle Gro that advertise that they have fertilizer don't have that much fertilizer. Certainly nowhere near enough for a complete growing season. Maybe a month, if the plant remains small. But with something like a Brandywine, it's best to assume you'll get 3 good weeks. And with all the rain we've been having, remember that the fertilizer mostly likely all got flushed out very early on. For my container tomatoes, I mix my fert at 1/4 the recommended dose and use that to water every three waterings or once a week, whichever comes first. If it gets hot and I'm watering every day, I reduce it to 1/8 strength every third watering. My plants are never overfertilized....See Moreaddicted2plants Southern IL USA
