Contemporary bathroom -- what tile to use in shower & floor?

Hi,

I'm remodeling my bathroom -- aiming for striking contemporary, spa-like look. My problem is what tile to use in the all glass enclosed shower and on the bathroom floor that will have the look I want. I've looked at many samples, but they generally looked too busy, too shiny, too beig-y, or too boring. I'd welcome any recommendations for websites, materials, pictures, etc..

The room is narrow but with lots of natural light coming in from glass blocks in the wall. Vanity will be a floating cabinet in charcoal gray with scraped horizontal wood grain and three sets of double drawers .Shower will be walk-in with glass enclosure.

Appreciate any help you could provide .

You haven't been very specific about your own tastes in color or how much or little "action" you want to see in the tile. That's probably why people haven't chimed in by now as there could be thousands and thousands of choices that would meet these vague criteria. One of your challenges with tile might be that you are looking at samples, when it might be more helpful to look at pictures of completed bathrooms as it's sometimes hard to visualize from just tile samples. When you use fake materials (or materials that emulate other materials) they look more real when used where the real materials would be used. You’d never put a real brick floor in a bathroom- too gross- rough, hard to clean, not waterproof, etc. So if you put fake brick in it looks REALLY fake.

Yes for glossy in the shower, great! white subway for the shower sides and the marble for the back wall ... kind of run the floor up the wall on the back wall of the shower? When you walk into the bathroom, are you looking straight at the shower wall? a few things to think about. Have you looked for bathroom tile ideas? small mosaic tile accents are too trendy, and don't always last the test of time. Why not just you the same large format tile for everything, including the niche, and so called accent? Classier. I am guessing you don't have the square footage to make the accents mean anything ... photo of the room would help.

You might want to put all one color subway tile with a decorative accent band in middle.. grout on the floor of shower and bathroom does not stay cllean, so use darker grout

Have you looked at Porcelanosa website or visited a showroom? They have lovely contemporary tiles. One you have an idea of the look that you want, folks on the forum can help guide you

Take a look at Arona Bianco. We used it in our bath and we have grays on our granite and didn't want the floor or shower to compete with the vanity. The tiles are large profile 12x24 and come in either Natural, which is not shiny or Polished, which is but still not like subway shiny. If you look through these threads, you can see some pictures I posted. Search with my name. The tiles are not white and not beige. Soft gray with subtle shading. If you want me to send you pics, I would be happy to.

mboston_gw: Love gray/white-- will definitely check it out. Pictures would be great!

kudzu9 - Love the texture-- similar to the striation of my vanity. Calm, simple-- which is what I'm aiming for. Will also use wide band of tile to brinkg in some pop.

The pictures aren't great - too dark but you can get an idea of the shading in the tile. I think it is the feel of the tile and large profile that makes it look contemporary.
This one is of the shower wall and was taken much later in the day - too dark in there to get a true color but you can see the subtle movement.

Here is our granite.

The pictures with the rugs in it show the truest color and it makes the granite well. We used a Maypei grout with quartz in it in the color Frost and the grout lines barely show.
