What's your season's best surprise (so far)?
Comments (13)No real surprises from my roses, perhaps because I didn't form any expectations about them. They've been giving me plenty of pleasure, though. The early species and hybrids have been flowering; now the Teas and those Chinas not yet in bloom are about to get going. Like elemire, we've been having a cold wet spring. Well, I did see a flower for the first time on a Mediterranean peony that I bought some years ago as a root and planted in truly terrible ground. The flower was large, single, lilac pink with a striking boss of stamens, and startlingly beautiful. The next day when I came to look at it again, it had already shed its petals. It was worth it. Next year I can look forward to it flowering again. Also I was surprised about how some of my snow crocuses and miniature irises wandered around the garden, ditto for some common sage that seeded far from any parent plant. And I just noticed today a striking iris (tall bearded) that I never saw before; if I remember correctly the color is a strange brownish purple, quite showy. These things are a lot of the fun of gardening. Melissa...See MoreAny surprises so far this season?
Comments (2)Hi Quinn! Great to hear that most of your plants and hoyas are alive are no worse for the slight neglect this winter. Congrats on all the new growths and vines that are showing up! That is such a nice thing to see. My best surprises as far as growths are my small Patella has a couple of new vines and new leaves are slowly emerging. I'm very excited about my Elliptica as well and my Sp. square...both growing nicely! But the best surprise of all came yesterday when I noticed that my sigillatis that had problems this winter(vines started declining and drying up) is finally showing some signs of recovery...I found some teeny tiny new growths on some of the vines! I hope this one recovers as its one of my favorites! Keeping fingers crossed! Good to have you back posting again!...See MoreEnd of season surprise
Comments (10)Here's a site that may help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brassicaceae The flowering plant family Brassicaceae, also called Cruciferae, is known as the mustard family or cabbage family. The family contains species of great economic importance, providing much of the world's winter vegetables. These include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, collards, and kale (all cultivars of one species, Brassica oleracea), Chinese kale, rutabaga (also known as Swedish turnips or swedes), seakale, turnip, radish and kohl rabi. Other well known members of the Brassicaceae include rapeseed (canola and others), mustard, horseradish, wasabi and watercress. Brassica oleracea, a plant of Atlantic Europe and the Mediterranean, is the precursor to Cabbage, Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli, Kohlrabi, Cauliflower, Kale, and most recently Broccoflower, a hybrid of Broccoli and Cauliflower. Radishes range in sizes, in some instances growing to proportions of over 1 kg (2 lb). The East Asian giant white radish is called "Chinese radish" or "daikon". It is mild-flavored and is usually called daikon radish in US supermarkets. The most common variety is carrot-shaped, and approximately 8 to 14 inches (20 to 35 cm) long and 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) in diameter....See Moremy surprise so far of the season
