What does it look like inside? I would say either kohlrabi or beets

The way the outside is white and the skin red, it looks liks a giant radish.

The top 3 look like a radish; the middle and bottom 3 look like beets. Are the top 3 and the bottom 3 pictures of the same thing? Interesting . . . Perhaps Burpee may help with this one. Keep us posted. I'm really curious to know what it is.

I've grown elongated beets called Cylindra. I don't think they were white on the inside though. Maybe some kind of hybrid variety (if they are beets). I agree with Irp that they look like beets on the outside but the cut one looks more like a radish.

The massive taproot of wild radish (Raphanus sativus), a common naturalized weed in San Diego County, California. Unlike the numerous, tender, cultivated varieties of radishes, wild radish has a tough, woody taproot that is unpalatable.

I hadn't remembered it flowering until I saw this site (thanks Julie :) But I remember thinking those little seed pods were very odd. However since when broccoli flowers its yellow I just figured I was doing something wrong and it was growing oddly LOL.

I did email Burpee, I hope they respond to me. According to the article I read, they basically sent me an inedible weed that I've been tending to all summer! LOL I think they at least owe me a free package of seeds next year :)

What is a beer radish? Do you eat it while you drink beer, or is it a garnish for the glass? Half my search results were for spam sites.

Michele, I say you lick a cut side & see whether it tastes radishy. If it is a yucky wild radish, I would bet that Burpee sent you duds & the wild radish just happened to grow in the same spot.

I've thought about tasting them but I'm afraid LOL.

I may be way off base, but we have a lot of wild radish growing in the vacant lot next door. I live in S.D. County, and these things sprout everywhere. They put out a seed pod that is edible, with a pointy tail. It is edible when young and used quite often in stir fries.

After awhile, the pods become quite tough, and not easy to digest. I haven't dug one to see what the root looks like, however, so my observations could be wrong.
