Roses whose scent carries around the garden...
Comments (63)Is Brooklyn a convenient location for you? (Sorry, my American geography is not so great..). If it is, the Cranford Rose Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens might be what you're looking for. They have a wonderful collection which seems to include a high proportion of Antiques and Species/near Species. Sadly, I only know this Garden through photos and descriptions. A lady from there posts here sometimes - is it monarda?? There were some terrific pics on a thread titled 'Spring walk around (very long)' posted by labrea last june, that should whet your appetite! Comments (13)it's funny actually, I think you may be right about the spirea. I saw a pink flowering almond at Huntington gardens this weekend and it looked a LOT like my "spirea". All I know about my "spirea" though is that one of my mom's neighbors in Charleston, South Carolina, gave her a branch of it, and she rooted it and it became a nice big bush. And then she rooted a branch for me and we just shoved it in my horrid alkaline clay ground here and it turned into the small bush you see now within a year or two. I'm really pleased with it. It seems to root really easily? (though I've never personally tried rooting anything, but my mom didn't use any special technique or anything...) that's actually the first bloom ever on Janet Inada. I planted it last fall in a pot from a tiny little band. It's grown a fair amount. I'm in love with it myself, I wish you could smell it! :)...See Moreeeek, will frozen budded lilacs still bloom?
Comments (9)I don't agree. These plants are hardier than that. Wait and see they'll bloom. My forsythia had opened it's first bloom last Tuesday when it was in the 70's and I thought it was done for. It's been down to 17 and we haven't had a high above freezing since then. The sun came out today and the temp went up to 40 and it opened a half dozen new blooms today. As long as the pond is not frozen solid and there is some free water I'll bet the fish survive too. Make sure you keep a hole broken in the ice each day to keep air flowing....See MoreLilacs are Blooming (clickable pics)
Comments (4)I bet your whole yard smells good Glenda! Do the named varieties bloom longer than old fashioned lilacs? My mother offered me a start of hers and I'm trying to decide whether I need another shrub. There's a new one out called Bloomerang that's supposed to repeat bloom all summer but I haven't seen many reviews on it yet....See Moreroselee z8b S.W. Texas
