Sharon (Chase) question about Rt. 66 (OT)

Sharon, if you're still here, I'm wondering about motels along the western portion of Route 66. Jerry and I are heading to California for a wedding, and will be spending a small amount of time exploring Route 66. I've booked the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, NM, but am stumped about points further west. We could stay in Flagstaff, Seligman, or Kingman, and still make our deadline of reaching Temecula (where we're going) in time for the rehearsal dinner. Flagstaff may be a bit too far, but it might be on our agenda for the trip back. Anyway, where did you stay when you took your trip? We're on a small, small budget, too, maybe $70.00 per night, or less. It looks like there are a few cute motels in Seligman, but it sure is hard to tell just by pictures on the internet.

Has anyone else traveled in that area? Do you have advise?

Edited to add this question, and to help it be on the "cooking" topic a little. Any good, cheap places to eat that aren't the standard chains? Remembering that I'm vegetarian and we're traveling in Beef country, it might a challenge.

Sally, If you do not plan to eat breakfast in Tucamcari, about 2 hours down the road is a small town called Edgewood (where I live). There is a restaurant called Katrinah's East Mountain Grill that is about 1 mile from the freeway. They won the award for the best breakfast burrito but they have a lot of good breakfast options. I enjoy their omelettes. Also, next to the restaurant is a great little bakery called Dough Re Mi if you wanted to pick up some good snacks for on the road. They have good coffee inside and some breakfast things other than pastry (although I never pay much attention once I have seen the almond pastry).

If you go a little farther down the road into Albuquerque (about 20-30 minutes) there is a great place called the Owl Cafe. It is like an old diner and is definitely a fun place. They also have a lot of T-shirts, mugs and caps if you want memorobilia. Here is a link to their site which includes a menu: The Owl Cafe, Albuquerque. In the vicinity of the Owl Cafe there is also Weck's Cafe which is strictly breakfast and lunch (it is off the Juan Tabo exit). I used to drive from Palm Springs, CA to the Albuquerque area a lot but we did it all in one day and it has been a while so I am afraid I cannot offer more suggestions but the drive is beautiful.

You might want to take a detour north from Kingman and visit the Hoover Dam. There is a new bridge by-pass that was under construction when Kevin and I visited a few years ago on our way to Zion Nat'l Park. The dam is very interesting and has some beautiful architectural elements, plus stunning views. We saw a herd of bighorn sheep grazing beside the road between the dam and Las Vegas.

South of Flagstaff you can take a side trip to Sedona.

On our last trip to Tucson (where I have friends - ex-business partners - that I visit), we went to Chiricahua National Monument, which was very interesting and fun. It reminded Kevin of the Roadrunner cartoons.

You should have a lot of fun! My DH and I did this trip in 2000. What are you using to help you find the original segments of the route? We used the Route 66: Travelers Guide and I think we had another book but I can't remember the title for sure. Sometimes it was a challenge to puzzle out some of the directions but we went on a lot of the original route including a brick section and one of the few sections of single lane road that remains. They were having trouble getting enough money to complete the route so they built some sections just one lane (9 feet wide) to finish paving the path at about half the cost. Mostly each evening I planned the travel for the next day. The path of Route 66 changed during the time it was in use so there are often alternative routes to choose between. One of the places we stayed was the Blue Swallow Motel in New Mexico - built in 1939, each room has a garage next to it for your car which was typical at that time. Drive carefully. Ladies, it's really not that big a deal it's the Penzey's catalouge not Gourmet! LOL My daughter said " Mom, what's with that? You make the pork all the time and I don't like the Spanikopita......brat! LOL Mind you the Phyllo pizza is a favourite of her and all her friends. I haven't seen the catalogue yet, they are mailing it to me at home and I'm at the cottage, so I have no idea what is in the mag vs on the website. I think the Spanikopita is only on the website but that the pork and the phyllo pizza are in the catalogue...but maybe not. Anyhow, it was fun.

Thank you, Sherry, my long lost sister. (grin) I've learned much from you too, like perseverence in the face of adversity, and being willing to always open your door to any friend, and that we both love molasses cookies and that it's way better to travel with a friend. I've also learned a lot. I've learned that Peppi's Dad is even more amazing than Karen's chili, and that's pretty darned amazing. I've learned lots of Sven and Olie jokes from Linda (doucanoe), and Elery's favorite food is now sushi thanks to Diana, Jessica, Lars, Scott, Gina, Ann, Ellen and the California contingent. Jessica and her number 1 son gave me a better understanding of kosher and David taught me....well...we'll just keep that a secret, LOL. Nancy gave me my all time favorite jam recipe which is just awesome on sweet potato biscuits, something she also taught me. KatieC helped me with the Ph papers and canning, and Cathy taught me that some people peel asparagus, who knew? LOLOLOLOL SharonCB posted that awesome salmon quiche recipe which Elery loves and I'm going to have it for breakfast tomorrow, I think, so thanks for the reminder. Chase makes me want to do the Route 66 tour myself, so thanks a lot. Ahem. Carol (dishesdone) has adopted me for every Jewish holiday and showed me that gefilte fish really wasn't bad and the other Carol (Readinglady) has never given me bad canning advice or a bad bread recipe. Brenda taught me the difference between Michigan chili powder and Texas chili powder (grin) and there is a difference. So, thank you Sherry for starting this thread and thanks to everyone else for all yourhelp, your thoughts, your friendships. It's a great place, this forum! Thanks, Tish and Lars. Your suggestions look good. I'll keep those restaurants in mind, they both are tempting.

Lars, I'd love to show Jerry the Hoover dDam. I went there as a child and was amazed. Sedona is also on our list of places to go.

Tish, we ate at Katrinah's this morning and had the breakfast burritos. They lived up to their reputation, they were delicious. Thanks for the suggestion. We ate a late breakfast, and now at 8:30 pm we're still full!

Glad you enjoyed them. DH and I try to split but we both want different things in the morning. I prefer a crazy Larry omelet (like a Denver omelet with green chile inside and sauced with red chile) and DH generally wants the cowboy burrito (green chile inside and sausage gravy on top). They are definitely filling. Wishing you safe travels!

Thanks. We didn't know they would be so big! Jerry likes meat and I'm vegetarian, so we rarely split dishes. If we go thee again weay have to.

Sally, I've missed this, somehow. I can't give you any advice about motels or restaurants, but travel safely and have a wonderful time. The only motel that sticks in my mind at all was in Grants, New Mexico. A Best Western for $35 a night with free breakfast, but that was several years ago, LOL, like maybe 15 or so...

Sorry Sally I missed this. We stayed at the Blue Swallow...way fun. I'm racking my brain for the name of the town we stayed next. great 50's motel and fabulous diner. I'll look at the atlas to twig my memory and get back to you.

It was Williams Arizona. Small town , the motel is right across the right street from a neat "Western" Bar that was lots of fun. Down the street is a diner with a Betty Boop waitress mannequin in the window. If I rectal correctly we had dinner in a Mexican joint.

You gotta stop and stand on the corner in Winslow Arizona!!!

When we were there I did stand on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. No flat bed Fords, though....

Sorry, it's been very whirlwind, and I have't checked back in for a few days, as I thought the thead had died. Thanks Sharon and Annie for your help.

Winslow didn't fit in our schedule, as we had to make it to Temecula CA Friday afternoon for the rehearsal dinner.

We stayes in Seligman at the Canyon Lodge. A nice little Rte 66 motel. The best part of that motel was the delightful German gentleman at the desk.

We're on our way home now and are in Albuquerque. I appreciate the warm wishes and help. I really want to make this trip again.

And yes, The Blue Swallow is the best little motel we stayed in, not counting the Air B&B place in Temecula. That was outstanding. It was a nice RV at a petting zoo and chocolate factory with spectacular views in the heart of wine country. What's more to like about that?

If anyone wants advice about where to eat in New Mexico, listen toTishtoshnm. She gives excellent suggestions. Just before leaving Abq., we stopped for lunch at The Owl Cafe, one of her suggestions. It was great fun. The food was good, the place charming, and the service friendly. We got prize winning shakes for the road. They even filled up our thermos, a big one, for the cost of one cup of coffee.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and well wishes. We're home now, and I'm off to work. (boo.)

Yes, I've been watching the blue and pink blobs on the radar in West Texas and the panhandle, thankful that we had sunny skies and clear roads for our trip.

Sharon, The Owl is just off Interstate 40, a very short block to the north, on the east side of Abq.
