Winter flowers for Florida (in containers)

Silvia or anyone else - besides pansies, petunias and snap dragons, are there any other flowers that make it through the Winter here that grow well in pots? I've decided to make a plant tower using graduated terra cotta pots. I know I could do certain herbs, but I pretty much have all of those that I need already in the herb garden.

Hi Rita

In winter of previous years I had luck with nasturtiums, begonias, delphiniums, dianthus, geraniums and they all can be grown in containers. If you want a lot of color on the leaves you can try different types of coleus.

This flower bed with impatients last for a very long time in this bed, in your area if you have them in a container in a porch it probably works.

I'd forgotten about Dianthus! I picked up some small pots of pansies, Johnny Jump-ups and a 16-pack of Dianthus just now. The pansies and jump-ups have several small plants in each pot so I've got enough to do 2 towers. Yay!

Well, while everyone else is using huge containers I've gone the other way. I want to make LESS soil mix and not have such heavy containers so I took the SWC buckets and use them in reverse. Instead of a bottom watering reservoir I drill holes in the BOTTOM of the outer bucket and use the wicking cup to wick moisture OUT of the mix, not into it, thus the plants roots can occupy all of the container mix, and the holes in the bottom of the inner bucket hopefully allow more gas exchange at the root zone (Thanks Al!). Everyone please bear in mind that I live in an area of extreme humidity and most of my problems are with soil that retains too much moisture, even with a fast draining soil mix. I get 5 gallon buckets free from Burger King. I do buy 3.5 gallon buckets, and they are about $3.50 each, but they are more durable than the totes in our intense Florida heat, and the double white buckets clearly cut down on heat in the soil mix. The pole beans in the first picture are in 3.5 gallon buckets nested in 5 gallon buckets, this could just a easily have been done with two 5 gallon buckets but as stated earlier I want to cut down on both the soil mix and weight in the individual containers...four beans in each 3.5 gallon container. Can I transplant these flowers to container for winter?

In my experience, If they are all perenials,I would put them into containers, or plastic hefty bags, and tie off for the root ball, water well, then transplant into their new locations.. If you plan on keeping them in pot, water well, then stick them in a place by winter, where once they are frozen they stay that way until the spring. That means covering them with a bunch of leaves, or putting them into the shade away from winter winds out of the sun to prevent thawing and freezing, or burying them in the the ground in the containers, until you figure where you would like them to go in the spring. I have done this, and it worked well for me. The nursery I live near does this to all the ones they don't sell in containers, especially their trees and perenials. They bury them with mulch, or cover them with burlap grouped together under shade cloths.. Some may react with no or less blossoms by next year, but they will survive and bring their glorious beauty to you by the following growing season once established. Mike

Thanks everyone for the insight. We haven't seen lower than upper 50s yet... my tomatoes and peppers (bell, banana, and serrano) are still thriving. I was even able to get cherry tomato cuttings to root about three weeks ago; they've got a few fruits on them already. My herbs haven't been the least bit bothered by the cooler temperatures. And newer winter stuff like parsley, leeks, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower is thrilled. Threw some eggplant and stuffed banana peppers on the grill this afternoon. This is why we love living in Florida! Really enjoying this new hobby. Always something to learn. And looking forward to my first winter and hoping I can keep it all alive through any January or February cold patches. Thanks again for the info. Great to learn from your experience!

I did dill the first year in pots and it is still reseeding in the adjacent garden beds. So, if you let it go to seed, it will. Whether or not it will come up in the place you want it to is less certain. Not sure which variety, probably bouquet. It did fine in early spring, tasty and tender green foliage, and the bees absolutely loved the flowers but the minute the summer heat set in it bolted and went to seed, despite my moving it to almost full shade. The seed was nice and big, so I didn't mind so much because I wanted some anyway. I'm not sure how you'll do it down there in hot FL unless you grow it in the winter and spring..

Rita, your towers are going to look very pretty with all those plants. I have for a few years some dianthus growing like ground cover, they survived the cold and the heat, one of my favorites. I also like alyssum for the winter.

Hi

One of my favorites is Lobelia especially the variety called "crystal palace". Flowers through winter and last year even reseeded through summer . though some of it died out . Will have to spruce it up . Was going to add a pic but comp won't let me lol it sprawls only gets around 4 inches tall so can be grown in very shallow containers ,I use drip trays . Has a fantastic deep cobalt blue color though there are other colors I have a weakness for blue Another is Fuchsia make wonderful hanging baskets as longs as it's cool. i particularly like the large, intense pink,deep purple which are the most heat sensitive but as long as nights are cool will flower profusely!! Was going to put up some large displays this year assuming summer ever ends?? No use doing it as long as nights are still in the 70's good luck gary

Some good suggestions above! You may also consider:

Baby Sun Rose - a hardy little trailer blooming in red or yellow.

Purple Queen for intense color in a compact package.

Also, my Vinca's are still blooming, but I'm not sure if nurseries are carrying them yet.
