How ironic that tonight's trip prize on Wheel of Fortune is a trip to Paris.

My thoughts and prayers are with the people there.

I just read that Patrick Dempsey and his wife were just in Paris about 10 days ago. It's such a fantastic city and I, too, am sending up prayers for the people there. It's interesting to me how easy it is to take these places for granted.

Another thing - in our local fish wrap - I love newspapers, but this one is sinking fast... Front page was about Paris and the front page of the Insight, was an article written for the LA Times by a gal and the by-line read..."I always say, instead of bombs, throw books at Isis." Someone should have stopped the article...

Thanks Ed, yours look good now! Yeah with most plants if they do not die the first year, you probably are doing well! Some exceptions. I had the NHB Chandler, and the first year that thing grew like crazy, the 2nd year it produced over 50 berries. I like the plant for it's growth habits. The berries are not bad, but take a long time to ripen. Has good hang time though! The canes are thick too, it's going to be a huge plant. Oh, a few of my plants threw late flowers too. One in ground did too.I removed them.

You're right, everyone has their own technique of seasoning. I've tried using coconut oil to season iron, but it didn't work as well as grapeseed oil. It's worth getting a little bottle of grapeseed oil just for this purpose (grapeseed oil is a good neutral oil for stir frying as well). Also, 300 isn't hot enough. Coat the pot as thinly as possible with grapeseed oil, place it upside down in the oven with a cookie sheet on the rack below it to catch the drips (line the cookie sheet with foil so you don't get burned on grease). You need to get the oil close to the smoke point--450 at least, for 20 to 30 minutes, then let the oven temp come down naturally. When it's cool, repeat the process. Do this two or three times and you should be well on the way to having a nice seasoning. What you're trying to do isn't just to coat the iron (any oil will do that) but for the oil to polymerize and form a smooth hard surface. Another technique: Flax seed oil works well, and if you follow the admittedly fussy directions at the link (she has you doing it several times before you can use the pot) you'll get a slick surface. But don't worry--use the pot often, with enough grease, and it'll eventually get seasoned. Once it's well seasoned, it should be nearly nonstick. If food does stick to it, here's one way to handle it without a brillo pad: put enough water in the pot to cover the stuck on stuff. Bring the water to a boil and turn off the pot, letting it sit while you clean up the rest of the kitchen. Drain the hot water out of the pot. The food may come off now without any further ado; if not, use a dry paper towel with some coarse salt to dislodge the crud. Then rinse out with plain water, dry with a paper towel, and (this is important) put it back on the stove and turn it on low for a minute or two to dry it abolutely bone dry. Then coat with a little oil and store. One hint: when storing the pot, fold up a paper towel into a little 2x2 square and put it as a wedge between the lid and the pot. That allows air to circulate. A closed environment could allow the inside of the pot to rust. It sounds a lot fussier than it really is; just keep neat freaks and their scouring pads away from your pot, and it'll develop a nice natural patina over the years. Maybe the reservoirs need to be more depleted in case you have another good snow year--we had near full reservoirs this spring, and it resulted in flooding farther down the system. It's a fine line, and the Army Corps of Engineers calls the shots on our many reservoirs around here. They judiciously released water from the reservoirs into the Boise River all spring, rather than having topping dams. The electricity generated by the dams is distributed by a publicly regulated (PUC/Public Utilities Commission) utility that is privately owned (Idaho Power Company). The PUC regulates rate increases by Idaho Power Company, which does make a profit and may sell excess power to other states. States that use hydroelectric power go this route, I think. They've been making shrewd use of the social networks, substantially for recruitment.

It seems to me that we need to do some serious thinking, to out-smart them.

Bombing may slow them, but it seems to me that they want to lure us into sending more boots over on the ground, to confront them directly, as much of their propaganda says that every time the westerners have interfered in their area in the last hundred years or more it has caused more trouble for the locals ... which will help to unify many who don't care for us much, and give the radicals more support ... including more bodies not only in the local area, but in our bailiwick as well, to carry their guns and bombs.

When we get blustery, as we have for the last couple of days ... it makes them look good in the eyes of many who are feeling dispossessed and hopeless ... thus to feel that maybe it would be a good idea to help them in their troublemaking.

It seems to me that we need to play the situation in a much cooler fashion - it seems to me that when we get all hot and bothered ... it helps their cause.

Which is the last thing that we want to do, right?

People living in despair can be unduly influenced by extreme religious and political views. That phenomenon is seen worldwide. Even in the US as well as in Europe. It appears that several of the perpetrators of these heinous acts were European born but obviously developed extreme views from the institutions and people they associated with.

The long term solution has to include improvements in education and economic opportunities for people who are impressionable today because of the hopelessness of their lives. If the battlefield is active, the acts of the civilized world are defensive and in reaction to attacks from the extremists. I don't think that should stop and politically, no leader can afford to be seen as taking a passive or conciliatory view so long as these senseless acts and battlefield activities (as in Syria and Iraq) continue. .

"European born" doesn't really mean all that much, considering a substantial portion of the population in France now live in separate communities, a so-called "parallel society", so much removed from mainstream French culture, language, and values. This is a very touchy social issue in France right now. Many local areas in France could easily be mistaken for a Middle Eastern country. France isn't the same place it was in the 70's.
