Legacy of J&P
Comments (39)Jackson and Perkins, IMHO, is a model for what went wrong with the rose industry. I don't blame only them for this, but they were the "face" of roses for decades in this nation, and they were responsible for leadership (or a lack of it.) The public perception that "roses are hard to grow" (at least any rose aside from Knockouts) is a direct result of years of trading research and honest effort in for marketing and making a quick buck. There is no excuse for the endless parade of hybrid teas that fall victim to blackspot, the claims of "hardiness" from roses that are not at all hardy in cold climates, or even the lack of own-root roses or alternate root stocks. I can forgive a company for trying to introduce new products vs. just selling classic, unpatented rose varieties, but when the new roses have the same problems year after year for decades, that just points to a complete failure on the part of the company. People have put up with much more nonsense from rose sellers than they have with almost any other garden product: "hardy" roses that are not, "disease resistant roses" that fail to resist any real disease, and so on. Is it really any wonder that the Knockout roses have so effectively replaced all other roses? Why? Because they actually deliver what is promised, and most folks are so shocked by that concept - a rose that actually grows as advertised - that they will only buy that variety for fear of being lied to yet again. While Jackson and Perkins may have at one time been a boon to the industry, they ended up being a perfect example of what went wrong: marketing trumped quality, and we were all left with dead, black-spot covered roses as the result....See MoreJ&P and the Insane Rose Quest
Comments (19)J&P doesn't have everything available on their website, which is why I was wondering if they are just getting rid of what they have left before shutting the site down. And if that's the case, of course they wouldn't say that to customers, because they want to sell out their stock. But the company has already folded, so apparently nurseries who have been buying wholesale roses from them (at least in my area), are having a shortage on J&P raised roses for this coming spring. And until they find another wholesaler to get them from, it will be an issue. As far as Cool Roses is concerned, they don't seem to be interested in selling anything to me, since every time I've contacted them about buying something they haven't responded. Because of this experience, I don't really feel motivated to ask them about Black Magic, but if any of you have had good experiences with them, I'd be open to your advice on how to get a hold of them. To answer the question of how cold it gets here, it can get down into the teens, below freezing. The thing about it, is that the extreme cold usually doesn't last more than a couple weeks, then it gets a little warmer. We might have two or three of these extreme cold increments during the winter. So it's not as bad as like Minnesota or something, not at all, but it does get cold enough that the roses stay dormant about five months. But I never have to bury established plants or anything like that, I just mulch them and let them be until the spring....See MoreReceived bare root roses from J&P. Now what?
Comments (9)Water them well now. Dig your holes so they will accomodate the pots, yet so that the soil lines are even, pot vs. outside soils. Wet the hole well. With a sharp knife, remove the bottom of the pot, set rose in the hole, and slit up the sides of the pot and remove. Back fill with soil and water. Keep them moist for a few days until they settle in. After your first frost, winterize, and hope for the best. Getting roses now is rather unusual. It is best, when ordering to specify you want them sent in the spring, like March, but not now....See MoreJ&P own roots came in this week! Anyone grow any of these?
Comments (8)Those look good! Did you get the price to go below 13.97 for Citrus Splash? I wanted Laura Bush too but it stayed at 17.47 even after entering discount codes. Wayside was the same way...i wanted to order trees, but even with the 40% extra code, it didn't go down any. I tried using the contact us button, but i got an email response saying that address was no good. So, both companies missed out on orders from me. Are you going to grow these indoors through the winter?...See Morenummykitchen
