European Nightcrawlers source? or trade?
Comments (3)Can you just put two or three red wigglers per hook? This might deplete the bin some but 16 year olds need as many good years as they can get fishing before other things take them away from fishing. A local school yard after a rain has nightcrawlers free. Use a flashlight to spot them outside of the light. Then snap them up. Or so I've heard this is the way. No need to purchase this way. There should always be babies and cocoons in the bin. So even if you harvest every adult one summer to meet your son's fishing needs there should still be some worms that will fill in soon. If you start feeding them more also start giving them more bedding to keep their balance. Keeping a youngen fishing I think is a good use of worms. Maybe he would like a bin of his own to experiment with with a bit of starter worms from your bin. I'm into low or zero cost so any container would work. Maybe he will even catch some extra nightcrawlers and have some to sell to those fishing who have run out. I've read stories where big fish are caught with tiny bait. There are also lots of Youtubes about how to capture worms....See MoreNeed Advice on Pruning European Roses
Comments (4)If you want them to produce hips you can't prune them during the season. You would only prune them in the early spring before the season starts. Depending on the type of rose, leaving the hips may reduce the amount of rebloom you will get. I'm not familiar with Autumn Damask or Blanc Mousseux but HMF says " Occasional repeat later in the season.: So I don't think you get any kind of big flush on them after the spring one. You may get one or two blooms here and there but nothing like a flush. There again, leaving the hips may stop repeat blooming....See MoreRemontant European Roses
Comments (9)Have you read the article, "Phillip Robinson Examines the Damask Perpetuals"? He discusses what he believes to be the small group of repeating OGRs that show little to no sign of China influence. I'll add a link to the pdf of the article in case you haven't read it and would like to. Phillip Robinson article Some of the ones he names that might still be available somewhere: Duchesse de Rohan Marie de St. Jean Marbree Pickering Four Seasons Rose du Roi of commerce (Vintage was the only one who carried the "original.") Blanc de Vibert Interestingly, even though tradition calls it a Portland, he considers Rose de Rescht an early Hybrid Perpetual. That might explain it's willingness to repeat for everyone. On that note, appearances can be deceiving, so I think testing the DNA of each of the so called "true" Portlands/Damask Perpetuals would be the only way to determine if they truly have zero China influence. But I'm skeptical by nature, so.......See MoreFacing Rose rosette virus: a risk to European rose cultivation
Comments (3)It is not currently present in Europe but it is signs have been found in India. The authors aren't sure if India has the actual mites or just some imported roses with the virus. Understandably the authors are very concerned about RRV getting to Europe! They talk a lot about economic impacts and how to prevent it from getting over there. There was an interesting bit about whether it can travel in cut flower bouquets--the answer seems to be "maybe but probably not."...See MoreRelated Professionals
