Experts-A Gas Fireplace for new concrete firebox?
Comments (0)We are building a new house and there is a large poured concrete opening for a woodburning fireplace. Maybe, 53" wide by 36" deep by four feet high. I would like to use it for heat as well as beauty. I think that I would use it infrequently as a wood fireplace. I think to run a gas line now and perhaps electric to the place. I think that it will accomodate a very large gas fireplace. My builder states that this house should have a woodburning masonry FP. Would it be hard to change it to woodburning if another owner wished? There will be a full flue as there would be for a wood fireplace. I don\n't know about a damper. I guess the firebox would not be outfitted witht a permanent brick firewall but would have to be done at a later time. Any suggestions as to what fireplace you would emply for a new large opening? Any recommendation is helpful thanks....See MoreChoice: Install Direct-Vent Gas or Pellet fireplace?
Comments (1)littleprius: for health reasons, sounds like convenience is a must. I had wood burners in previous homes and love a natural fire. But it required stacking and carrying wood into the house. DW got tired of all the mess. In my current home, I have a Direct Vent (DV) gas fireplace in my family room. Also a DV free standing gas stove in my basement. They are both convenient, but my gas stove puts out the best heat. Good luck with your decision. -jasper...See MoreCost to install wood burning fireplace
Comments (9)Not sure of your foundation set up but a Isokern fire-lite may work. See if you have SOLID 2/10 trusses under your floor. If you have new style Engineered I beam trusses I would check with builder of your house to see if existing trusses can support the weight before going any further. The 36"model weighs 1000lbs but doesn't include weight of Cinderblocks(280) FaceBrick or Stone or Tile (300-500) Plus weight of FireBrick Lining(200)inside unit. Your floor must support all these and metal chimney (generally must be 3 ft above roof height by Code). The weight coould exceed 3500 lbs. Cost in Virginia for unit was $2500 + Mandatory Flue attachment $1000 + Chimney pipe (EPA Approved double Pipe) ~$200 per foot. + $1000 mandatory Isokern dealer Install. This does not include transportation, tax or building a chase for the chimney pipe in your home. This is far cheaper than a Solid Masonary unit..which with Foundation,Mason,Materials and in NY-NJ-CT area could be anywhere from 10k-30K~ Good Luck; you mall also want to check the Firerock site, they are made in Georgia, USA. Here is a link that might be useful: Isokern...See MoreInstall gas fireplace in existing firebox?
