Coffee table: Yay or Nay?
Comments (10)Not TOO bad, according to this from the Style at Home link that I will put below. But how wide and deep is it, and do you have enough space? I'm guessing it's approx 4 feet long, and it's height will make it 'seem' bigger, even though it's glass. How large is your room; how long is your sofa...Maybe do a mock-up of the size with newspaper, and then gauge the height. "Size matters - The standard height for coffee tables is from 16 to 18 inches, but may go as high as 21 inches. A higher table is a smart choice if you entertain frequently so that guests don't have to bend too much to set down their drinks. But, ultimately, the height of the adjacent upholstered pieces should determine the height of the table. One guideline is that a coffee table should be about the same height or one or two inches lower than the seat height of the sofa. The length of a coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of the sofa (not including arms). The width should be determined by how much room you have between the soft upholstered pieces and the table in your seating arrangement " leave at least 16 inches around each side of the table." Here is a link that might be useful: Coffee tables...See MorePegboards as Pot Racks: Yay or Nay?

Comments (53)akamainegrower, I have 3 Rutgers here in TN, started with 4, one died. I found them 10+ years ago at a box store, never seen them for sale anywhere else, so got one of each that they had. As you said, there was a lot of hype so I thought try them. I don't remember the varieties off hand, but I do remember they were from the original introductions. They grew well at first, then one contracted a canker that girdled the trunk at the ground line and died outright. Another got canker, I cut it below the infection and it regrew and is the best of the lot now. Of the two others, one is growing okay and the other is showing signs of canker. Native C.f. is subject to a canker both in cultivation and in the wild, but seldom kills the tree. I don't know if it is the same as the C.x r. got. I have a couple C. k. (out of ca. 25) that have a canker in the crown rather than the trunk, doesn't seem too serious though. C.f. of course is native and extensively used in the landscape, and C. k. is becoming much more popular and can be found in box stores. Both perform very well here, with k. being much more disease and adverse condition tolerant. I'm not sure I've ever seen a C. x r. used in any local landscapes. Here C. f. blooms early-mid April, C. x r. blooms late April-early May, and k. blooms mid-late May. There is bloom overlap between C. x r. and C. k. if April has been warm. In my opinion C. f. and C. k. are the far better trees, both in general esthetics and ability to thrive in my conditions. I've got lots of room, so the C. x r. can stay, if space was limited, the would have been replaced long ago. Of course, the same plant does not perform the same at all locations. But I am disappointed that a cross of two species that do so well here do so poorly, at least for me....See More**opinions please** brick "look" porcelain floor TILE ...Yay or Nay?
Comments (35)@SJ McCarthy Everyone has been super helpful and either the brick is a look you like or you don't which I get but no one has mentioned the brick against the wood laminate except you. The washed grayish brown brick looks completely fine against my existing wood laminate - I included a picture with my floor and the brick tiles and there is nothing wrong with it. The reddish brown brick suggested here is also a washed looked and something I am considering. Both the brick I selected and the tone that was suggested are warm. You say that I am trying to add a very warm floor to cool tones, but how is that wrong? You can mix gray/white cool tones in the same room as warm tones so I am not following where you say that is an issue. I see it all over Pinterest and HGTV with gray walls and orangish brown wood floors and the same toned wood in bamboo shades and baskets so..... And yes, I am saying I want a floor to add warmth due to all the cool tones. Most people select wood floors to add the warm element. I am in a situation where I can't add wood floors so I need another option. I have looked at silver travertine, brown travertine and everything in the middle. I've been to 4 flooring stores. I do not like the look of travertine because I see too much orange in the options that would go with my color scheme. I appreciate your suggestion but I spent $4,000 on the laminate I have throughout my downstairs 3 years ago. It's not going anywhere anytime soon....See Moretgb1
