help with country french cottage look
Comments (24)Coming late to this to say that your inspiration picture is, I believe, one that I saved for a few years. Mine was in Country Living Magazine. I tossed it out as I began to go with a more muted , sophisticated, or quiet look for our family room, adding color with accent pilows. Then I got red slipcovers for the sofa during the winter months, reverting to the beige upholstery in March. Well, this Christmas we set up a long bar for a party, and decorated it in red plaids and checks. I fell in love.....again! Seeing your/my inspiration picture has me almost ready to commit to my original desire for this cheerful French Country look. Liking change has always made me fearful of prints, but you have about convinced me to just stop worrying and go for it. And if I cared much about trends, color is surely about to make a big comeback. So thank you, Val! Good luck with your livingroom, and please post pics of your progress! Comments (22)ttodd - Glad you stopped by to comment! I love your beautiful home and value your input a lot. About the pictures, can you elaborate on your thoughts about the wood frames. Are you thinking of stained wood frames, similar to the bureau? It would be really helpful if you could post an example. I'm trying to envision things. I am wondering if I do wood frames over the current bureau if it will appear that too much wood of the same tone is concentrated in one area of the room. But, as you said, if I bring in the painted candlesticks and other items, it could balance it out. Also, do you think I can group the three animal prints together, leaving out the rose picture? I agree with not painting the bed and bureau to start. I'm hesitant, as the condition of both are very good, and I know it will be a lot of extra work! ales9179 - Thanks for your thoughts. I'm hoping I can keep the current dresser. Since I share the room with my hubby, I don't want it to turn out over the top feminine. I love French Country style, but I guess more toward the French Country Farmhouse side, if I had to define it; relaxed and beautiful at the same time - sawdust and pearls, so to speak....See Moreneed help with a shabby chic or French country update on these rooms
Comments (7)If you have no budget, I assume that means, you can still buy paint and painting supplies. You have good advice here about painting. I would using pinterest and instagram to get great ideas and define your style and achievable goals. I too like French Country, and I like to look at Charles Foudree's interiors, and on Instgram I follow accounts like Jane French Home and a few others with "french country" in the name. Probably you already follow Rachel Ashwell for your shabby chic side. There are a lot of ways to diy the look, so maybe look into some blogs and accounts to investigate how some people teach themselves how to strip/refinish furniture, re-upholster things yourself, etc. In the meantime, you can start shopping on OfferUp and Craigslist and similar sites. You can get really good deals, here and there, if you are persistent, and if you can sell some of your stuff, you can pay for the new stuff. I too am on a really tight budget, but here and there I can add a cane-back chair or a pair of candlestick lamps. Looking at your photos, besides painting the walls as others have recommended, I would then try to choose colors/tones that appeal to you. You have warm flooring (which is beautiful), so I would recommend keeping eyes peeled for ways to swap out the cherry-looking furniture. I know there is nothing wrong with your furniture!! But I don't really see so much of that in a country-french/shabby home. With a small budget, it's going to happen over time, and that's ok! My personal opinion: I would be looking to replace the chandelier (or paint it), the glass-top tables with the Tuscan-appearing black bases, the metal wall tree, and the overstuffed/chonky dark sofa. And I would replace them with things found on OfferUp, such as some gold-framed original art, and neutral wood or painted pieces that have simpler lines without being "modern"....See MoreI need help choosing a roof for my French country home
Comments (16)I agree an asphalt that isn't wood look, there are lots of options but the options I have here in the SE may be different from wherever you are. Are you sure about the black windows? It is a very current trend but seems to fight the traditional style of the house. Bronze maybe but not black- look at all your inspo photos... (Fyi I love black windows- all of mine are black- but my house is contemporary)...See MoreRelated Professionals
