Plastic/PVC Water Pipe Repair

I have a leak at the elbow of the water line going out to my outdoor faucet. I was wondering if there is a certain kind of glue you have to use when joining together plastic /pvc water line?

There is cement and purple primer for PVC. Check out any big box store. You will have to cut out the elbow and install new.

I was told that the specific one that geoffrey_b's link points to The red labelled "All Purpose Cement" should not be used on PVC pipes, or anywhere else. Instead if you have PVC pipes, you should use the PVC solvent cement linked here.

Old galvanized pipes have a finite lifespan. If you repair this leak, you have a good chance of it developing another leak in another location. The only good solution is a complete pipe replacement. The major expense of a pipe replacement will involve the digging of the trench from the meter to the house. This is an area where a DIYer can save some money. Have the utilities companies come out and mark the location of the pipe and any other utilities going to the home. Then you can choose a route parallel to the current pipe but just far enough away from it that you aren't disturbing it. You can rent a trencher (Maybe $200) and hand dig the larger access points at the meter and house. Then you can call a plumber to lay the pipe and make the connections. If you are not physically capable of doing this, then do you have any family or friends that would be? Church group? Scout troop? There are usually community resources that can help you to figure out what you can do here. The worst thing you can do is to ignore the leak.

besides that, the DRAIN PIPES are supposed to be hand tight, not sealed. next time you get a clog you will have to cut it all out and redo it, thus costing you 2x what it would if done the correct way.

To Just-a-PB: "...you may have to replace the orings in the jandy valve, it probably sucked the center one right out. Once primed it may suck air from here....You will know pretty quick once you get it put back together if it primes, and sounds right." The system has actually been working well since I put the valve in the proper position. There's been no sound of air being sucked in by the valve. I still haven't fixed the pipe. I plan to do that later today. I'll also look at the internal pump parts IAW poolguynj's suggestion. To MAS895: I see what you mean about the outside diameter of the union but it's a 2.5" coupler is a little larger. Even if a 2.5" coupler fit on the outside diameter of the union, it wouldn't work because I wouldn't be able to slide the union nut back over the 2.5" coupler. just-a-pb's suggestion is a simple and elegant fix (especially when I use a 2.5" to 2" reduction coupler at the jandy valve). I considered reforming the pipe but I think it's been weaken and replacement is probably better. I wonder if I should use schedule 80 for the pipe. It's supposed to be stronger. I'll post a photo of the fix when I'm done.

Is it the condensation pipe for your AC unit? I wouldn't fit something inside it to repair it. The ridge will prevent the condensation from dripping out and you'll have some standing water always in the pipe. Since it isn't under any pressure, I'd be tempted to just glue it back on as is and block off the area so that nothing bumps it again. If it falls off again, you can come up with something else then. Alternatively, do you have access on the inside? You could cut it there and shove it out and patch a new piece in. It's a more permanent and proper solution, but maybe overkill for the situation.

Yes. My reading comprehension skills are above average. Over several years of reading here and on other forums I have come across several posts claiming that the "All Purpose Cement" was a poor choice. The reasoning seems to be that while it can be used to join PVC to PVC or CPVC to CPVC or ABS to ABS that it is a compromise product that doesn't do a particularly good job in any of those applications, since the chemistry and/or the density of the three materials are different. The joint will be less strong in each of the three applications than if you had used the solvent cement expressly designed for that application.

So while it is rated for each of those three applications, if you know what material your pipes are, you'd be better served getting the solvent cement designed for that material. If the OP were using it on drain pipes, and had already purchased the cement, I'd say go ahead and used it. But since the OP seems to be working on supply lines, the greater strength of the correct one purpose cement may be beneficial. Especially given that he/she has already experienced a leak.

In reading further, the biggest complaints against the "All Purpose Cement" is that people see it labelled with those three materials and decide to use it to join ABS to PVC, which is not allowed and will garner an immediate red flag from an inspector.
