Tell about your Meilland Roses
Comments (36)I grew Yves Piaget on its own roots and found it to be lacking vigor. I would try it grafted next time. I grow Charles De Gaulle- I find it to be less than vigorous on its own roots. Nice fragrance though and pretty flowers. Peter Mayle- Peter grows tall and narrow, nasty thorns, flowers usually come singly, intense complex fragrance, lasts uncommonly long in vase. Nice long stems. Mine does well in part shade, but the repeat is kind of slow, it would probably be better with more hours of sun. Rouge Royale- Wish I had a better picture. When fully open the flowers are large, flat and quartered. Lots and lots of petals. Intense fragrance, lasts very long in vase. Every year I make a pact with myself to cut every bloom off this rose and let them open in a vase because so many of them spoil instantly when left on the bush. I never do it though and end up regretting it. The color is often more Raspberry than this picture shows. Its worth growing if you love fragrance and cut flowers. Frederick Mistral Freddy flowers later than any of my other roses. but once he starts, he keeps putting out. Strongly fragrant, with large flowers and a large bush, struggles with thrips. Needs extra room. I've lost several over the years to winter and RRD, and I don't currently grow him. Papa Meilland Ooh la laaa- Papa Meilland has intense fragrance, puts out a generous amount of big deep red flowers, that hold their fragrance and blue as they age. The stems are brittle and the bush is awkward and not symetrical. I have mine planted in close groups and they look good as a mass, but they didn't look good as individuals. Comptess De Provence- Sorry no pic, but this is a pink. A most unusual sharp fragrance, that is very hard to describe. Very thorny and nicely rounded symetrical bush, good repeat, great for cutting. Bolero- Sorry no pic. This is a workhorse, more of a Floribunda than HT. Nicely fragrant, loose, many petalled creamy white. Low growing, rounded habit....See MoreMeilland roses - "Fire" and "Ruby"
Comments (3)I think that I had all of these several years ago including White and Alba. Thou I'm not positive about Ruby. I live in northern Illinois They were always crown hardy and some years there was cane left. They were very healthy and flowered continuously. Now here is why I took them out. First they grew 6 to 7 foot canes and I had not allowed that much room for them. You can't keep them in bounds by trimming. They were the type that if you cut the canes length. They respond by shooting out 5 foot laterals. If you don't cut them they will send out short laterals with more flowers. They also aggressively tip root when canes contact the soil. But these may work for you and your situation. If you live in a warmer zone where these are cane hardy prepare to have a huge rose. There are other excellent reds that are very disease resistant and hardy. Depending on where you live....See MoreI have 20 new roses coming for spring! Austins, Kordes, Meilland, etc.
Comments (34)Suzanne I have three off your DA list, all were planted last year. I can’t help but call her Dezzi, I have two, and absolutely love her. She blooms her head off and is super healthy in my garden. Across the path from Dezzi is QoS. Mild myrrh fragrance, narrow, but taller than I was expecting. Very disease resistant for me. This year I’m moving her to the back, and putting Bliss at her feet. The Poet’s Wife. Love, love, LOVE her! She stayed in the 3gal pot I bought her in all season, and surpassed my expectations. Big exceptionally fragrant blooms that remind me of fruit cups I used to get in my lunch box as a kid. I ordered two of her so I’ll have three for my mailbox garden. She does get some lighter colored blooms, I’m not sure if that will change once she is in the ground, but also very disease resistant for me. I don’t spray. I almost got Savannah too this year, and I hope South Africa turns out good. This will be my first year with a few Kordes, I mostly have Austins atm....See MoreMeilland: The most interesting Rose fact I have read in months
Comments (11)I've always pronounced it the correct way...my husband is a native French speaker (from Quebec) and he's always correcting my bad pronunciation :)) We also have a French last name that is perpetually mispronounced here in America. You should see my husband try to order an omelette at a diner...it's hilarious! No one has a clue what he's asking for. I have to say it the "American way" so they know what he wants. Personally, I find French hard to understand! When I went to Norway, I understood that language much better. Go figure....See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
