Uh oh - 34 tonight - anyone else worried?
Comments (9)Every year I warn my friends and neighbors not to plant until after tax day. I wait til the 15th, and then look at the 10 day forecast before I plant..usually. Doh! This year I planted bean seeds last weekend, and they have sprouted. No problem, I can either cover them or just plant more. I planted my cucs, melons and squash early this week when the low was only supposed to get to 38. No problem, I covered them with row covers to exclude squash vine borers anyway. My big problem is all my hydrangeas, blueberries and strawberries are endangered. I'll be busy this evening putting the sheets on them all. http://agrowingcuriousity.blogspot.com/...See MoreAnyone else feeling a bit teary eyed?
Comments (27)Oh goodness. I wish that I could muster up some sort of tears to see this kitchen go. But, there's nothing in it that is sentimental to me at all.We moved into this house about 2 1/2 years ago, knowing then that the kitchen reno was happening because I hated the kitchen. Hated. Really. Okay, so it might have been considered "grandma's charm" if it had been my grandma's house. I know the older, previous owners (deceased, rest their souls) must have loved their little kitchen...and so for that reason, I feel a little bit bad, particularly since the hideous cabinets are actually in good shape. But, it's Bad, with a capital B. I feel a little bad that we are taking out cabinets that are still quite functional (no doors falling off, etc.) and that there's almost no chance that anyone in their right mind would want them...not not even really for a garage...although we *may* use an upper for out in our one shed. But, I hate that they aren't in worse shape because other than being ugly, they are in good shape. We've had no Great Family Gatherings here. We've had meals that I've served...but I've disliked cooking in the kitchen from the start. The only thing that has made it remotely palatable was that we sawed out a cabinet when we moved in to put in a DW. Without that DW, I would have surely lost my mind. And I have a RTA rolling cart that will be retired with the new kitchen...it's likely to be craigslisted. Bring on the new kitchen...I've been ready for it for a long time!...See MoreDoes anyone else feel like 'tea' today? :)
Comments (21)I know the feeling, Shades- I'm enjoying an adult beverage right now. One of the first things I planted at our new place was 2 daffodils. That's right- two. The little church I visit up there had a sermon which related to daffodil bulbs, so each person got one in a little kit with fertilizer and instructions. I wasn't going to take one, but the cutest little boy ran up and was SO excited to give me one! Then folks I insisted I take two; one for me and one for my wife. In the spirit (pun intended) of the thing I felt obligated to plant them. We visited in February, and they were up and had buds. Alas, we weren't there for the actual flowers, but I was still excited. Two down; about 500 to go. I want to naturalize them all over the place....See MoreAnyone else in Calgary feels like quitting?
Comments (21)hugs Ostrich ...I understand hail storms ... when I lived in Brisbane, Australia we had a massive one in the early 80's and it damaged/killed/smithereened so many plants ... it was heartbreaking ... I just got back from visiting my parents (again in Brisbane) they'd had another massive hail storm in November and again ...devastating ... there's nothing to do ... just pick up and go on..... the only advice I could give to my mother was to pot up babies of some of her more tender/valuable plants/succulents and grow them in a safe place permanently ... for her it was under her balcony ... Luckily many of your perennials will come back (I hope!!!) because i'm assuming they have to be very cold hardy to survive your winter. Funny enough I keep telling my husband that I want to move to Calgary (or that area - maybe Lethbridge) ... we've lived near Toronto for 25 years ... so thanks for the warning :) but it's still a beautiful area. :)...See Moreglenda_al
