Please help me with the paint for this hot mess.
Comments (11)When I think of your home, I keep thinking of taking it in a cottage type direction. Of course if you live in the Southwest, that is going to be a bit strange. But anyway..... I see either all the trim a color, and the house a cream, and the door a complementary color,..... or I see all the trim a white or cream, and the house siding a color, with the door another color. Do you see what I mean? For instance, right now the roof trim and porch supports are one color, and the window trim and porch railings are the white. It is not flowing together for me. So, some scenarios could be cream trim, pale yellow walls, green on the shutters, and a dark green glossy door. Or cream trim, pale green on the walls, yellow shutters, and a darker yellow glossy door. I remember someone (I forget who) who did a remarkable transformation on a house with yellow trim, red siding, and black shutters and door. It was incredible and I wish I could post the pics for you. Something like that would work with your roof color. I don't know how it would look to only have one set of windows with shutters. There are some fantastic photoshoppers on this forum, I hope they chime in for you. But to complete the cottage look, I see shutters, a light by the door, window boxes, and colorful pots with flowering plants on the steps and porch. Also, it looks like you have sidewalks going out on both sides of the house. They look like they would limit options for putting in a cottage type flowering garden, or greenery of any type. Where do they go? and do you need them both? Hope this helps and that some of the really talented gurus on this site will chime in for you. I just don't have the talent or vision that some of them have. And I searched for Zipdee's home for you but couldn't find it. It is the most beautiful shade of yellow. It is just perfect!...See MorePlease help me not mess up the faucet...
Comments (23)Hey y'all -- thanks. I did mock it up, or close-enough (seems I forgot to mention that above; sorry. It was fun -- there's finally a roughtop in place so I sketched out the sinks and projections). It's poised for a big space so surprisingly, its purported massiveness will probably work. As warmfridge and probably others noted, its 9.5" "throw" will too. At this point, frankly, I'm mostly worried about the droll warnings on here about its off-brandedness. I'm not really sure what to make of that, frankly, as so many customers seem giddy with excitement about the Kraus. Unfortunately not, seemingly, from this site (that is, they're not unhappy with it here, there just seems to be silence regarding it). And of course it is completely true that I cannot and have not felt it. But I am cognizant that even though there a large number of accolades, few if any of them represent anything other than happiness with appearance, as opposed to function. I think it is Buehl who posts periodically to remind people that offbrand sinks, namely Kraus, are just wonderful. And many have taken her advice and are happy for having done so. However Sinks and faucets are likely very different animals. FWIW I too bought a Kraus sink and while it isn't installed, I'm as thrilled with the next about the packaging (I'm not kidding, most of the accolades wax on and on about the packaging; that is why their owners are so happy!). So ... it's kind of news to me that I'm coming across as such a name-brand devotee but maybe it's true. I guess I think I want to remember how much is getting spent overall and not go crazy about saving pennies and losing the dollars. (pennywise-pound foolish). And I hear you saying that's the case here. No offense but I also hear you saying you just don't know. And that's where I'm a little stuck. I don't actually think there's anything inherently wrong with Chinese offbrand products -- I could be wrong of course, particularly when there are working, moving parts involved and also conversely when the price differential may not be so huge. But having come to all this with no experience whatsoever, the idea of spending hundreds on a faucet has me agape. I had no idea a person could spend that much money on a faucet. I would have thought they were about $1-200 max. That's how out of it I am. I guess one question I have is: how difficult is it to replace a faucet if/when this one stops functioning? I just learned, to my surprise, that the counter guys route out the holes after the tops have been largely cutout. That's good news as therefore one could punch a new hole in place if necessary. Covering up one would obviously be more problematic but I'm sure people figure out creative solutions for even that. So I'm leaning toward johnliu's point of just getting it and seeing. This, BTW, is where I usually wind up getting off the shopping train: before ever reaching the station. That is, this is why even though I'm located in a megalopolis of shoppers, I wind up buying most everything sight-unseen. I'm interested in what I choose; not in what I don't! Nevertheless, I will foray to a couple more stores today. I am mystified by rococo's memory of a large showroom. I'm sure it has to be true, but I am also sure I have zero idea where it might be. I could call my KD but she's so incompetent... I have tried to converse with her about this issue and it's not as if she said: "oh, just go to xyz and you'll see it all splayed out in front of you there". True I didn't ask the question but it would seem the obvious thing to offer were it to exist. And geesh, drolldavid - do I complain on here that much? I didn't think I'd been posting displeasure.... maybe I have and didn't realize it! sorry... and thanks all....See Moreeeeeek...orange paint! Help me find a better color (pics)
Comments (29)ellendi - so I guess that could argue for greenish walls or beige-y cream walls. The paint could bring together either the tiles or the counters which are actually a very light tan. And the grout, which is "almond" looks much lighter than I wanted it to but it's another light cream factor. Hmmmm. I am going to the SW store on the way home. Will have them mix up a few and paint them on to see. Will try to take some photos. bluemoon - I like the Masada in that kitchen but I think I've burned myself on the orange and there's no going back. I feel completely decisionally incapacitated at this point. Too many decisions are not going right. I am going to spend triple the cost of that backsplash fixing that sticking-out edge and some bad grouting between the splash and the counter (I know, there's supposed to be siliconized caulk there, not grout. Told the tile guy that. He said it's ok 'cause the grout is polymerized. In either case he didn't do a good job with that line). What I do love so far is the counters, the sink (single bowl - would never go back), and the Kohler Karbon faucet (the most awesome faucet ever for a lot of reasons especially the ergonomics of washing dishes)....See MoreI messed up, please help!
Comments (13)What are you trying to achieve? If you want an ornamental tree, the techniques may be different then if you want maximum fruit production. Sounds like that advice was intended to encourage lots of low branches that it's easy to pick fruit from. Discourage upright growth and encourage branches fruit will grow from. Useful if you want lots of fruit within reach. Not necessarily helpful if you want a classical tree shape. Also, the advice was for almond, apricot, cherry, fig, nectarine, peach, plum, pear, apple, and pistachio trees. You aren't growing any of those. Ask yourself this: Is there any reason they couldn't have grown the tree another year before selling it to you? If so, it can probably wait another year before getting pruned. You can always top the tree later, you can't undo it once it is done. Only real risk us the tree will get too tall. Are you worried it will get too tall for the location? Is it freezing there? Remember, don't prune this tree in freezing whether. Here is a link that might be useful: Pruning Hawthorne This post was edited by edlincoln on Thu, Dec 18, 14 at 17:35...See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
