first.. not uncommon due to transplant and transplant ... they have been a bit stressed.. dont you think ... look to the growth tips.. rather than worry about that stuff down low ....

second .... the media looks awful rich.. and awful wet ... i grow them... in the ground.. in sand.. and barely water them.. but for the transplant ...

in that small a pot.. i would never allow the pot to be in sun ... no trees like hot roots ...

for the first month.. i would have the plant in full bright shade ... and then slowly move it to more sun .... but place the pot behind something.. so the pot itself stay out of sunshine ...

if you just planted it... and that is why its wet.. do not water it again.. until it dries to two inches.. keep sticking your finger in.. to find out ... they are not water loving annuals... perennials.. nor aquatics ....

how this all works in your corner of the world.. i have no clue.. i can just give you vague generalities ...

Could be the move to a rather large pot for size of plant(s) is doing what that always does-leaving the medium too wet. There's just not "enough plant" to utilize the moisture in the soil. Very low energy level going on here, compared to free-range plant, growing in the ground somewhere where conditions suit it. If you are sufficiently settled, they'd do better planted in the ground. Roots might be rotting.

Finally, on that score, Thuja have bright red roots when they are healthy. If you tip that whole works out of the pot, do you see any of these roots? Any dark brown roots? The latter would be roots that have died.

What soil are they planted in, in the pots?

They need well draining soil. Not soil from the ground. The medium they are growing in for pots is everything. And they can't have anything under the pot holding water in, like the built in lip at the bottom of that pot. Just a straight bottom with lots of holes so after watering the potting soil inside the pot has a chance to dry out.

Have you seen any other thuja occidentalis growing in Dakar?

I would be surprised if they able to survive long term with little to no chilling hours, or am I off base here?

Any thoughts on this from anyone?

I too think it a most unusual place for such a plant, but what do I know? Certainly, in all its natural range, a tree adapted to regions with colder winters.

I want to thank you all for your input , sorry if i didn't respond sooner was on mission and snowbanana i was able to find the Thuja growing in a hotel here in Dakar.

i think what ken_adrian said is true they were not dying my bad .

It is just that i brought also cuban royal palm and false ashoka tree and half of each of them died .

To respond to Butterfly4u the type of soil is compost made from Casuarina equisetifolia and sheep manure.

wisconsitom i will plant them in the ground once a move to my own house which is actually under construction .

Aisqua, you mentioned Dakar. Are you in Senegal then? Again, I should think a most unusual place for this species of plant, but hey, no harm in trying! They do look good.

Off-topic-I used to travel the country (the United States, not Senegal, lol) playing in a couple reggae bands. For a while we were working with a drummer from Senegal.
