Some quilts I've finished in the last few months...
Comments (22)Sorry folks; I don't know the pattern name, designer, or book or anything about the Christmas tree pattern. This one was a mystery quilt...and all I was told was that if anyone wanted to make another we'd have to purchase the pattern ourselves. But I don't know that information.... Maybe benbel1006 or coalaska could share the necessary information from their pattern. benbel1006 ~ There were only two tricky things about this pattern. 1) moving all the cut pieces home from our meeting without them rearranging themselves LOL and 2) Because seam allowances aren't factored in, not having edges meet as you proceed to add each new piece. (This was hard for me personally since I'm more like a perfectionist and like to have things match) It does keep each block from being exactly like the others...and that's nice! lol...See MoreInherited my mothers quilt studio - working on my first quilt!
Comments (20)My Mama passed almost seven years ago, and I am still working on her fabric stash, but with materials used for quilting and also every other type of material one could need. I started quilting about a year before she died, and my first quilt was a Christmas gift for her, I finished in February. I kept company with her as I was quilting and she watched it come together, not knowing it was for her. She had always wanted to make a quilt, and had started the blocks for a Cathedral Windows, inspired by a friend when we lived in Missouri, as state just famous for it's cottage quilt industry. When one drove through the Ozarks, it was commonplace to see them hung out on clotheslines, to catch the eye of passers-by. She had also made some yo-yos but they disappeared sometime and I've never found them. I wish you much enjoyment with your new hobby. I think you'll find yourself close to her spirit as you work, as I find myself close to my mother when I am in my sewing room, handling the fabrics she had saved over the years. I have made about thirty quilts since then, really surprising myself since making ONE quilt was on my bucket list. LOL. Welcome to the forum, and my condolences as well on your mother's passing. BTW, that is one beautiful design you will be finishing. I also have a quilt cat who loves to lay on my blocks and scatter them too. He keeps me company each morning as I sew, and prefers my sewing room to all the others in this house....See MoreFirst quilt piecing finished
Comments (17)Thanks, everybody. It's great to know I'm not the only one who is disappointed in the result occasionally. Yes, Durango, that 1/4" seam is a bear to maintain. which is one reason my seams don't all match perfectly. Because they didn't match, I had to flip a block which put matching fabrics right next to each other. (But the seams matched on that side.) I got better as I went though. (I also bought another 1/4" foot.) I think I'm going to add a additional row of blocks all around. That way, it will be big enough to snuggle up in. My original plan was to give it to my sister, who was born cold. So, I'm considering a flannel backing, although the colors will be more limited. If not the flannel for the backing, then my favorite fabric from the charm pack is this one, which might make a good backing. (Or, am I just adding more pattern to more pattern?) But, I found this knockout fabric at MSQ while looking for a photo of the above. My charm pack was Summer Breeze 111. This fabric is from Summer Breeze 11, but I've never seen it in real life and it might fall into the category of too much, also. I had planned on a backing similar to this with a touch of yellow, but haven't really started looking for it. What do you think? bk...See MoreTA DA! First quilt finished, finally
Comments (25)When I came to the crooked corners, I just kind of guessed at it. The rest of it worked well. I decided it was fine and went on down the road. I couldn't change it, so I might as well be happy with it. And I am. For my first quilt, I'm really pleased. Of course, there are several mistakes. On some, I was too far down the road to fix them. On others, I was tired of Mr. Seamripper. I learned a lot about cutting accurately (I also bought an Accuquilt.) and how much a small mistake gets bigger. Same with 1/4" seams. I've tried two different feet, the old thing you screw into the bed of machine (I'm into vintage machines) and painters tape. I bought a laser at Harbor Freight last week, but haven't figured out how to put it on the machine. So, all and all, my sewing and cutting skills are improving. Still lots of room left, though. bkay...See Morepolardream
