New oak tree fungus

I just had a oak tree installed today because my last one died. The tree was in a pot all its life. I got the tree from a different nursery this time. But tree came with alot of leaves missing im assuming they diddent wrap it when they transported it on the truck. Also the tree has multiable fungus growing on it. As seen in the picture. I would like to get rid of the fungus. What product should i use? Amd also will the tree be affected by loosing all its leaves in transport. How can i help it through the stress. Im in central florida.

last pic.. harmless lichens ...

first pic.. something from down south that i am not familiar with ...

many of these things.. like the lichens.. are a tell tale sign of clean air ... and should be considered a free show of ma nature... as they are subsiding on the air... not the bark ... in regard to such.. dont fix what aint broken

I had considered planting pin oak for some much-needed shade, but I spoke with a family member about their pin oak, planted when I was a kid. He had to have it removed a few years ago. He got about 20 mostly trouble-free years out of it in zone 8. I enjoy reading Steve Nix's Forestry Blog at about.com, and here's what he has to say about Pin Oaks http://forestry.about.com/od/treeplanting/p/bad_pin.htm If I lived in zone 9 and had a more "coastal south" soil, I'd be rushing to plant a live oak, but that's just me. I recently went to New Orleans and so many of them were left standing after the storm, I was shocked. Also, as far as your temperature zone goes, Red Maple would probably do batter in zone 9 than Pin Oak, but do what you like. I hope it grows well. Not much can beat a good shade tree! Grifola frondosa is a parasitic fungus - getting its nutrients from the oak roots. Fortunately it is a "good" parasite, not killing its food source but keeping it alive as long as possible in order to maximize its own life. Unfortunately, most of the time the host tree eventually dies, probably from a combination of the Grifola infection and environmental stresses such as drought and wind or because of other fungal issues. Harvesting the Grifola won't necessarily prolong the tree's life. The parastic infection will remain present underground - the sheepshead or hen of the woods is just the visible fruiting body.

Best to stick actual fingers in soil, to assess moisture status. Then be advised-moist is adequate. sometimes, due to dissimilarity of rootball soil and surrounding backfill stuff, one or the other may be dry while the other is wet, so do pay attention. As to fertilizer, new transplants have lost most of their root system. So....what it needs to do is regrow roots, and it will do so faster if soil is not excessively fertile. For the most part, trees are adapted to fairly low-nitrogen situations. Probably the best thing you can do, aside from proper water management is to keep a nice, wide ring of organic mulch around the tree, but not up around the base of the trunk. No "landscape fabric either, please. That ruins the effect of slowly-decomposing organic matter enriching the soil, in just the way trees like. Oh yeah, and the thing about those spikes is , it's completely bogus for there to be high concentrations of salts (that's what such fertilizers are) in one spot, then none in another. If and when you ever do fertilize, simply broadcast the material over the top of that mulch, and perhaps surrounding turf, being careful not to burn said turf. Easy does it in fertilizing trees, and none initially. Some day, maybe three years hence, you could take any spikes you've still got left, grind them up, and then distribute over the top. It is a once blooming rambler from 1895. It was in our garden when we moved in, and had NO CARE for at least 20 years before that. From where it was growing, along the fence but surrounded by a Japanese quince bush and a Flowering Crab Apple tree, it had climbed up the tree, and puts on a great display every year right after the tree stops blooming. What I am trying to say is that it is, here, a very strong rose. No idea what it would do in FLA. Jackie

Is it flat, scaly and blue-green? If so, it's lichen and harmless.

If it were fuzzy, white, black, or on the leaves, it could be fungus.

What zone are you in? In my area trees are losing their leaves anyway this time of year, and wouldn't much care if they lost leaves now. A live oak in Texas might be a different story.

The lichen and air plant are not fungi and strictly speaking are harmless but they do not usually cover a young, vigorous tree so comprehensively. The general state of the tree looks pretty bad to me, like something kept far too long in its container and allowed to deteriorate. Sparse foliage, lots of wonky, twiggy growth and nasty orange twine guy ropes for some reason. I honestly think it should go back where it came from and you should get a refund.

im in zone 9. The oak trees usually dont loose there leaves till spring. I was thinking of getting some copper and spraying the tree once it gets settled. Theres this green scally stuff and also theres some green fuzzy stuff also. I believe the tree was in the pot the whole time. I decided i wanted to nurse the tree back to health to give me a project. If it dies they said they will give me a new one.

How brittle are those lower branches in that first pic? You may want to find out how many branches snap off easily before taking this "project" on.

Spray nothing without knowing what you are spraying for. With the way the supports were tied, I'd certainly be checking the root ball to see how it was planted. Was any burlap or twine left near the top? Can you see a root flare? The more I look at this tree the more I think the only thing I'd want from this nursery is a refund.

Both the green scaly stuff and the green fuzzy stuff are harmless attachments - they do not need to be sprayed nor should you spray them.

I agree with flora and tj............I'm not sure that tree is worth any experimentation to bring it "back to health". Unless they gave it to you for nothing. If it's been grown in a container its entire life, I'd suspect there's a lot more wrong with the tree than what we can see above ground. It looks in very bad shape.

keep it properly watered for the next couple of years. and get rid of those non-flex stings used to tie it down. They will strangle your tree. and that will be another problem. If it were me Id replaced it if I were too concerned about it.

Several here have already spoken the facts-that the stuff on the tree is all harmless, but that still, it's not good to see so strong a showing on such a dinky plant already...and that the general aspect of the tree is not good. BTW, in florida, there is a bright red-orange lichen-also harmless-but most unusual to see. Looks like a bit of that is starting here too. And also BTW, even very flat white patches on trunks is usually also a lichen, one which has not yet had its photosynthetic algal partner kick in yet. One more thing-the stuff that is more spiny looking is probably a Tillandsia, an epyphyte or "air plant" which also is common in FL, also harmless, and is a Bromeliad.

You initially said "fungus" and the lichens are paramutualistic organisms, one part of which is a fungus. But again, it is not only not harmful to whatever tree it may be growing on, they' re of great interest and beauty.

the tree is severely stressed .... for all the reasons above.. including the transplant ...

based on such.. i am always loathe to cover something so stressed with goos of any kind... on the logic that it could just be more stress ...

besides the fact we repeatedly are telling you.. this does not need treatment ...

looks like a mixture of lichens and ball moss to me... but that tree looks like a 'weak sister', as the old folks used to say... I'd like to see what cuz'n Rhizo1 thinks of the situation.
