I need to decide on a new slide in gas range ASAP since counters will be put in in about 2-3 wks. Does anyone have the new KitchenAid slide in gas range model#KSGB900? I've seen good reviews on it, although I've heard that only one burner actually goes low enough to really be on low and the others seem to go from high to medium-no low. Also that the right grate goes over the left one a bit. It doesn't look like it in photos, but that's what someone complained about. I've also heard you can find a similar range just as good that's less expensive, but I haven't seen any.

If you have this particular KA gas range, how do you like it, is it true that only one burner goes really low, is any part of it hard to clean and do you have any complaints or really like it? Thanks!

Any other range suggestions are welcomed(Although they all seem to have really good AND really bad reviews) - If I don't go with the KA, I'm back to square one and I'm tired of looking! :)

(Also consistent with other things, but trying a longer preheat may help eliminate this as a possibility.) Please note that I'm not talking about triggering the so-called preheat signals. I'm telling you to disregard those because they are usually grossly misleading about the ovens' actual readiness for even baking. We've had numbers of threads on this subject, but, briefly summarized: think about how the oven heats up. Many ovens fire both the upper and lower elements during preheating. (Don't know if the Cafe double-ovens do this -- does your owner's manual say anything about that?) If the top burner is still heating the cavity or is still very hot when you start your baking, you can get burned spots and such. But even if the top burner isn't being used, the pre-heat indicators only measure air temps to give manufacturers some bragging rights about how quickly their ovens preheat. It actually takes much longer to get the cavity itself hot and radiating as opposed to just having hot air in the cavity. The radiant heat from the cavity walls is what actually does most of the work in baking. Also, until the oven walls and floor are fully preheated, the burners will cycle a lot and produce some pretty wide swings in temperature. Turn the oven on, and the burner(s) stay on until the air temp may goes some distance above the set-point, maybe 50F above the set-point or more. At that point, the burner shuts off. It comes on again at, maybe, 50F below the set point and continues to heat until nearly that far above the set-point. This process continues for a number of cycles, with the variance lessening with each cycle as the walls start radiating an even heat. Eventually, the oven temperature will stabilize around the set point. When it does, you are much less likely to get serious hot spots and burned baked goods. A second possibility, is that the oven wasn't properly calibrated at the factory or got shaken out of calibration in shipping. You would not be the first person to find yourself with an oven display that is reading too low. Check it with an oven thermometer. If you've set your oven for 350F but the oven thermometer shows 425F, you may well find hot spots and burned patches on the baked goods. Maybe you've already tried this? If not, go to a hardware store and get a dial face oven thermometer. (IIRC, CDN, Taylor and Cooper-Atkins have been recommended brands.) If you find your oven is running hotter than the setpoint, you've got something to discuss with your servicer. Again, this is something a servicer should be able to handle but advance knowledge is power. (The GE manuals will tell you how to recalibrate by yourself, but the service folks should be equipped to do this and you are entitled to warranty service.) Also, bear in mind number 2 above, too. Don't let the servicer try to claim they fixed things by running the oven for a mere five or ten minutes. Third, against the possibility that the service person might turn out to be the kind of idiot who says "they're all like that," I suggest a search here, on chowhound and anywhere else that might have threads on the double-oven GE Cafe ranges. If you find that most users report the ovens being fine, then they're not "all like that." You might also point out that Consumer Reports rated the GE Cafe double ovens as good for evenness of non-convection baking and that is hardly the case with your oven. We've had it for a few months and we haven't used all the features but for what we have used it for - it's been great. It looks great, the interior is huge, and we haven't had any issues cooking/baking with it. A few notes though - when baking, the knobs get very hot (because of their placement up front...might be an issue with kids around) and preheating seems to take a bit longer than my previous range but nothing intolerable. I've used the griddle once to make pancakes and because the burner is in the middle, the center ones cooked fine but the outer ones did not cook as well. I ended up just making the rest of the batch in a separate griddle pan and not sure if I'd really use it again. All I can think of at the moment - let me know if you have other specific questions and I can try to help.

I had a kitchen aid which was not gas, had so many service calls. Electric control panel went out, twice. Burner went out. And on and on. At one point I was debating whether to sink any more money into it, as I was facing a 2nd over $700 repair. I complained to the service rep that it was only 6 years old, and shouldn't be in that condition (it was an expensive model too). She said that I was lucky that it was still working at all after 6 years! I would not buy another. Don't know about the gas, but do know that they don't stand behind their products.

We are renovating our not-large kitchen and have settled upon a 30-inch slide-in range to get better pot capacity on the stove without moving to a 36 inch. I hate to cook - really, I dread it - so I'm thinking that a true pro-style (wolf, viking) is just not worth the $$ or hassle of maintenance. The Kitchen Aid range seems sturdy, but I haven't seen it perform. I've also heard that there is a KA Pro style range, that might or might not be worth the extra $$. Today, we saw a Kenmore range that seems perhaps the teensiest bit nicer than the KA ... but again, not sure on performance. Any feedback? Any other brands or styles I should be considering? Also - worth it to get dual fuel or just gas? Will I hate cooking less? (one of the things I hate is that my gas oven never seems to cook things in the time the recipe says, and yes I have an oven thermometer)

Seeing the discussion about the new Jenn-Air....burners are really powerful, takes a long time for oven to heat up, door/handle gets hot and 5th burner not very useful, all kind of make me wonder. I don't need super powerful burners and want to be able to turn it down to low that really is low, probably wouldn't use the 5th burner and don't like that it takes so long for the oven to heat up and that the door/handle gets quite hot. Also, it doesn't go over the countertop on the sides, which would mean buying the trim kit. The KA doesn't go over the counter on the sides either and the trim kit is expensive. I do like the strip in the back that goes all the way to the wall.

Also, all other appliances are black. I'll go with stainless if it means getting the right range that will hopefully work well and be quite reliable.

Can anyone help since I just found out that the counters can be installed much sooner, so I need to pick the range ASAP! Thanks!

As I said, I looked at the one review of the new Jenn-Air. Does anyone else own that one or the new KA? Looking for more opinions from someone that owns it.

The JennAir and the KA are the same thing. Sorry, I thought that was clear but I should have mentioned it in my last post.

I've heard that both only have one burner that goes really low and the other 4 seem to go from high down to medium and not really low. Is that true?

I don't know, I have never used one. Generally most ranges will have a dedicated "simmer burner" that goes lower than the others, doesn't sound too unusual to me. You generally only start to run into ranges that have all identical burners as you move up to the high end.

Unfortunately, I think the KA has the Aqua-Lie so-called "self cleaning" and worst yet, you cannot use chemicals oven cleaners in there. I think it would be better if Whirlpool maybe lowered the price $100 and made these manual clean so at the very least, we could use Easy-Off.

I just read more on the steam clean(Aqua-Lie) and it doesn't work at all and when people called KA to complain, there was silence on the other end. KA must not have known about it until people called and complained about it. If it doesn't work and any cleaners(Easy Off) will ruin the special coating on the oven walls, then there is no way to clean it. People are furious.

I was set on getting either the KA or Jenn-Air, especially since I would get excellent service from the appliance store near me. Now I don't know what to do, because other brands have horrible customer service/repair. Now what??????? Suggestions????? :(

More and more of the ranges are going to Aqua-Lift, which gets terrible reviews. I'd stay away from it at all costs.

We will be probably be using a Bosch range since it's still traditional self-cleaning. I believe that GE still has traditional self-cleaning as well.. We noticed that wall ovens (we're considering cooktop over wall oven installed in the base cabinet) are still traditional self-cleaning, but if the government gets involved, probably not for long.

I was looking at Bosch, but it only comes in stainless steel and I would really prefer black, or at least if I had to, stainless with black cooktop. Bosch has a stainless cooktop. I give up!!!

It says the Bosch gas slide in has a warming drawer, but in the photo there's no handle. Anyone know if it actually comes with a warming drawer and if it does, if there is a handle?

Just saw something that says there's no handle on Bosch warming drawer. How are you supposed to open it if it's hot? Really????? Other suggestions please!!!!!!

The Bosch electric is stainless with black cooktop, but sounds as if you're doing gas.

To open the warming drawer, you push on it and it pops open. I never thought about whether it would be hot, but I suspect it wouldn't be an issue because it really shouldn't get HOT if it's a warming drawer.

Does anyone actually have it? I really want a black range, since my other appliances are black, but I don't think any of the Whirlpool, Maytag, KA, Jenn-Air are all that good(or at least I can't find a good one). Frigidaire and Electrolux are supposedly not that good and the only other one at the appliance store is Bosch in SS. I'm really afraid of going to Home Depot etc. since they don't know much about their products and don't service them. I've heard bad things about service with other brands, that's why I'd like to stick with an appliance store that services everything they sell.

Any advice on what to do?????

Disagree. Maybe for some of their other appliances, but their ranges have a good track record.
