Help...Need a decision on kitchen...hubby doing elec this week

Here's the deal. Building a brand new house. Basic U shaped kitchen with an island in the middle that looks out to a large living dining space with magnificent view. It's just the two of us now - we have grown children, maybe grandchildren someday. We cook quite often, hubby works everyday, we have breakfast together every morning and dinner. A friend told me her favorite part of her new kitchen was the warming drawer. I had never heard of one and decided I must have! I use my oven in our rent house almost every meal just to keep everything warm so we can sit down together and have warm food. But now I am torn. Do I really want this? Right now plan is electric wall oven with warm drawer underneath. Gas cooktop in the island. But maybe a double oven is better(I can always use one for warming(someone else told me just use your oven with a pan of water in it to keep food from drying out). OR...another option is do a drop in gas range in the island instead of cooktop. That way, I have a gas oven to use if power goes out. I would skip the warming drawer with this option, perhaps find a drop in with a warming drawer on the bottom(which seems ridiculously cumbersome to me so might use the electric wall oven with the water in this case). Sorry if this is worried - I'm in a bit of panic because he's ready to go on the electrical :) Send me some wisdom please.

1. I wouldn't do gas, I'd do induction. The reason I'd do induction is you are obviously heading into those years if you have grown children and induction is so much safer. Plus it's so much easier to clean up. No burnt on food. The cooktop never gets hot!!! The majority of the people who switch from gas to induction say they'll never go back to gas.

2. if you are a big cook, I would look into getting a regular oven and a steam oven or a regular oven and a speed oven. Steam ovens apparently can cook a whole meal without anything drying out. From everything I've read, warming drawers really are useless.

Do yourself a huge favor and post your question in the appliance forum. You'll get some excellent advice.

Thanks so much. Gas line already in for the island. I will post in appliances, I'm new to this. I would love to look into your ideas on steam, but afraid it will start bringing the price up, was already over on appliances. Same for induction.

Thanks for your replies so far! I would just like to respond to a few of the issues which have been raised here. 1)There is a weight limit where I live on how heavy the dog can be and therefore, although I would love a golden or a lab, they are way beyond the acceptable weight. 2) I have a securely fenced in back yard which my pup would only be in when I accompanied him out there, leash on him of course, just in case he got a scent and wanted to escape/explore. 3) For the past 7 years (the time I have been in a wheelchair)I walked my cocker spaniel 3 to 6 times a day every day, rain or shine in my wheelchair, pooper scooper in hand. She died six months ago and up until the week before she died we were out walking, doing our thing. I could be wrong, because it has been a very long time since I have had a puppy, but I believe if the puppy ia exposed to me in the chair, that will be the "norm" for him and the way he expects to be walked when we go out. I should also say that the puppy is only 2 1/2 months old and has not completed his puppy shots, so he will not be going outside to potty until the vet says he is ready. I have "piddle pads" for the puppy which will be placed near the door for him until he is ready to go out. Until then I will be introducing him to a collar and leash so that he knows what to expect when we do go out for a walk. And I do agree with those of you who have said you thought the rescue folks were rude and inappropriate to me. I got off the phone with that person thinking I had just spoken to a psycho beagle nazi! Please keep your wonderful comments coming. They are more helpful to me than you know and I will of course keep you all posted to the eventual outcome of this saga. Many thanks!

A couple of shops were also installers so the person that came out was the sales/installer. A few others had separate sales and installers. They would send sales out to do the measuring, provide an estimate and close the deal before recommending an installer. We did keep the windows+door purchasing process sort of independent of the installer because we wanted a good licensed contractor with a BBB history, not just a windows installer. Some shops laughed at us and said it would cost more but we did not care. If a shop has no association with such a contractor, we would just find our own. In your case, if the shop insists on installing, it seems perfectly reasonable to interview the "installers" before buying from that shop. We have met many a shop with a licensed "general contractor" but the "contractor" was never on the job site, never visited the site. The crew that came out was just a crew of workers. We had bad experience with that sort of approach in the past. This time, we wanted a licensed contractor who would actually be ON THE JOB at our site. We are in northern CA (just a few miles southeast of the Summit Fire that is burning out of control right now) where summer heat can be painful and winter cold tolerable. We have low-SHGC low-E II coating. In your case, a mid-SHGC low E II may work. Ok, a little embarassed that I'm back on this, but yes, I'm baaaack:).... I've dragged this out as much as I can and finally made the trek today to see the furniture guy... I explained that I was stuck. My hardwood floors throwing me off as don't have the room for a rug underneath. ( I don't have the width space wise) I indicated their stain offerings were all too dark and wasn't convinced I wanted to paint it. Then inquired about taking it unfinished so I could have it refinished elsewhere. Great news is he said no worries...just bring in a sample of whatever stain I want and they'll match it. Yay!!! Now, I have still have to decide within next 2 days. They really need to fret this done beginning on Monday. I ran into a decorator at another store and she overheard conversation and said go with driftwood finish. Well, here are the light and dark versions of driftwood against my flooring and I think they're tool cool against the floods. ( but I do love the light grey if I had the right elements for it) A few more shade options: 1) a warmer version of driftwood 2) Reddish brown 3) This ones reclaimed wood, but perhaps could get a lighter similar shade. Great for coastal look 4) Lastly, closer to floor colour, but perhaps too close/ still too dark Keep in mind the new chairs are painted BM White Dove with light coloured linen upholstery. Any other recommendations now that I can go with any stain shade or BM paint? Opinions? ( apart from telling me to go away ) Many, many thanks again!!

Louise Soil could be wet deep inside, even if top is dry. it all depends on what it consists of. Best way to find out is to use bamboo or other wood skewer or chopstick, that will reach deep down into pt. Extra water accumulates there, and it could keep your soil mix wet. It is impossible to guess what the bugs are without photo and sometimes even with photo :) I understand that it is very difficult to photo very small bugs. Could be springtails (they come in many different sizes, colors and shapes), soil mites, root aphids...and many. many more. It is possible for bagged soil to be infected, but bugs still need certain conditions they like to thrive and multiply. More organics in your mix and more water + higher temps and/or humidity, better environments there is for many bugs. Common advice is not to use things like worm castings in potting mix. They are great for gardens, not so much in containers. (from wiki): Springtails commonly consume fungal hyphae and spores, but also have been found to consume plant material and pollen, animal remains, colloidal materials, minerals and bacteria. ETA: I just looked up Ecothrive Charge. It is beetle poop - so you are adding more poop to your pots, together with worm poop. ..."Laboratory tests have shown that Charge consistently contains more than 450 million colony forming units of beneficial rhizosphere bacteria per gram! "... It also states: ..."Charge is a 100% naturally-produced potting soil enhancer ..." Soil enhancer is not fertilizer IIRC.

I was torn between gas and induction. I went with gas because of power outages. They are real occurrence where I live. In fact we are planning Thanksgiving now and my DH reminded me that last year we lost power at 5am on Thanksgiving day and didn't get it back until Sunday.

My Bosch dual fuel slide in has a warming drawer on the bottom. Yes the bottom is not ideal. I had never had a warming drawer before and thought I wouldn't use, I love it. In a future kitchen I would want one if on the bottom worked best for my layout that would be fine. The frequency of use would not make the bottom a no-go. Even if I used daily, its once in and once out. Save primo real estate for things I use more often.

BTW Gas on an island is just about the worst and least safe place for a gas cooktop. Plus do yourself a favor and do some reading on the appliance forum about range hoods and why they are so important. And not a downdraft.

And a gas line can be capped.
