Very true 2 winters ago was there worst in 50 years but there are still some there. Just like us they go the distance to protect there palms. On average our winters are much colder than there's. It always stays very cloudy which keeps the temps up for them. There wetness combined with temps around 0 for a few days dosent bother them. Its our combination of wetness and prolonged cold that kills everything. Most palms that are subtropical can handly temps into the teens with only frond damage..if you can keep them dry that is really the key. If you looks at jim hardys protection method and scale it down for a zone 7 you can grow alot of palms in the ground. Your going to have to do a little work to grow anything other than the normal fortunii and needle there's just no way around it..even the pygmy dates from lowes can take temps in the 20s with protection..just keep them dry and insulate well..the water bottle buffer method is one I might try next year as well

What I read about these palms is they will take that low of temps.but only for a short time,like you said.This past Jan.we got down to 12* for two nights and it dident get above freezing for 5 days,the rest of that week the lows were in the 20s.I bought three seedlings of Phoenix Theophrastii off ebay,they seller said there cold hardy to 5*.He said I needed to wait till there 5 or 7 gallon size before I set them out in the yard,and protect them for the frist couple years.I read up on them and there suppost to be the most cold hardy Phoenix palm.Does anybody have any knowledge or experience with the theo palms?

Yeah, Im going to say they can handle about down to 20F. Some are grown well in the southern parts of the outer banks of NC but thats a mild zone 8b maybe even a borderline 9a. I think lower than 20F will kill it, but they can definitely handle below 30F (they were not damaged in many parts of central florida last winter from the historic freeze which brought temps to the mid to upper 20s a few times at night). They dont like wet and cold. Thats a very bad combo for most palms and a very common combo for areas in the east during the winter months. There are other palms and even other phoenix palms that can handle lower temps and give you a similar effect. I think a pindo palm would the the next best thing for a more cold tolerant version of that type of effect. But I think you can get a phoenix canariensis to survive the winter with some protection. In a zone 8 I dont think your temps drop below 20 too often so just protect it when temps are forecasted to drop below 25F if you really want one. Good luck! -Alex
