Christmas, Kentia, and Butterfly Palms in Sunset Zone 15?

Has anybody had success with growing these palms in my zone? I am interested in creating a "tropical paradise" in my backyard with palms, bananas, gingers, heliconias, and other tropicals. I have some overhangs that I can keep plants under, if that will help. I know that the Kentia Palm can be grown in the Bay Area, but will it survive in my zone? Any other tropical (and tropical looking) palms and trees that will grow here?

Phoenix robelinii (Pygmy date palm), Sago Palm, Phoenix canariensis will grow here. You might also try a Tupidanthus.

I'm hardly an expert on this--I haven't grown these in the ground personally. However, I used to live down the street from the Huntington, so I've seen a nice collection of plants at multiple times of the year. I agree strongly on Aloe plicatilis as a must have--especially with all the other Aloes. I've noticed them in the nurseries a lot lately (9b, Sunset 15). This actually surprised me, as I thought they were supposed to be borderline for our climate. I gave my potted one from Pasadena (10a, Sunset 21) to my mom (zone 9b) to put in the ground after it got too big. It died within a year or two (cold, poor drainage?) You might make sure they are suited to your climate even if the nuseries are selling them. Full grown Beaucarneas are incredibly striking in my opinion. If you like them a lot and you have the room, you should go for it. You might be trading drama for diversity, though. Have you thought of one of the Puyas with the metallic flowers in colors that appear to be "not found in nature"? They're spiny and some are quite large. It should take up more vertical than horizontal room. I think it might depend whether you are 9a or 9b (if even those are OK) Is Encephalartos horridus considered a succulent? I know the trunks of some cycads like this are called caudexes. Although a cycad I think it would fit in to a succulent planting. Would other cycads work? And finally, definitely a non-succulent, but what appears to be a familiar plant adapted to a dryer environment--maybe it would fit in. Strelitzia juncea: it's very similar to Strelitzea regina, the regular bird of paradise, except that the leaves are generally lost in the adult, leaving only a reed like plant with just petioles. One of my favorites--if you're close to the Bay Area I got one at the Dry Garden in Berkeley. I see you aleady have a Strelitzea though... I think living in California where we can grow so much, there's no reason not to branch out and plant the unusual things that others won't normally see. None of the above are that unusual, though. I wouldnt recommend plastic unless you can assure its 100% dry. to much moisture in the crown will cause fungus and rot. once it gets to big for that your going to have to make a little box greenhouse around it for the winter. unless you go with a meedle or a windmill or somthing it will have to have some protection at some point..unless global warming takes over

1. King palm..all the best you want in a palm.Fast,very tropical looking,ideal size for the average home-or less than average,hardiness. Only down side is loves water. Howea. Best looks around,Fairly hardy. The downside is sloooooooooooow growth. Also light sensitive in warm areas..too much ,it burns,not enough- slow to the squared growth. 3. Queen..downside?..very common.Grow it well and it still can turn heads like a hot blonde. 4 Butia and its hybrids. Downside?..hard to find,bordering on expensive and slow growing but not the worst thats for sure. 5. Brahea's..what you wish your Washingtonia would do-stay in scale with your yard. Again,another hard to find for sale. Although the palms themselves are perfectly at home here. 6.Phoenix roebellini. Perfect here. And just catching on. Runnerups are : Magesty palms,Bizmarckia.Young ones popping up,with time they could move up the list....

thx for the help all.... got what might be a silly question, but I don't know much about plants..... kings seem really cheap, is there a way to stunt their growth? for example, there are 25 gallon kings in plastic containers that are 12 feet tall now, what would happen if i dug a hole, and planted the tree IN the plastic container IN the ground? would it stop the king growing? or something bad happen?

That is a great list, Joe.

To make things easy for you, we are in Walnut Creek near North Gate Road, also in Zone 15 (although fairly hot summers), and our subtropical look comes from a smaller palette of plants:

Queen palm (dominant species in our yard)
Phoenix roebellini (a little sun sensitive, but apparently not cold sensitive)
Musella Lasiocarpa
Musa Basjoo (hardy Japanese banana)
Strelitzia reginae (does REALLY well)
Fatsia japonica
Clivia minnata (keep out of the sun or it burns!)
Sago palm (Cycas revoluta)
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (red flowers seem to be much hardier than other colors -- like the difference between zero winter damage and total defoliation just inches away from one another)
Bougainvillea (San Diego Red and Barbara Karst -- grow REALLY fast and look good year round)
Butia capitata (does really well)
Brahea armata
Oleander
Phormium Tenax
Cast iron plant (also keep out of the sun)
Phoenix canariensis (pretty standard, tough palm)

Schinus molle - California pepper tree -- very soft and feathery eventhough not really "tropical"
Jacaranda - also surprisingly tough and fast growing, but needs really good drainage also -- we lost our first one and replanted another in a much better spot

This list overlaps with JOe's, but it's smaller and these are proven in Zone 15 for sure.

I would stay away from Kentias unless in a shady spot under an overhang for sun and cold protection. Worst enemy will be sunburn, second worst would be frost, but overhang should do the trick, and they can take some frost actually.
